Welcome to AD and enjoy! :)

I/we are very involved in her education at C.I.D. as well as at home. I plan on staying just as involved when she gets older, so sign will allow that.
After she was diagnosed, we looked at the school dist we were living in and discovered it to be unacceptable for what we needed. We moved last aug. to another area thata has an incredible school dist that will do what ever is needed to help Lilly.
Oh, another word of advice...... I don't mean to criticize or sound like I'm attacking you, but please remember that it can be very easy to have your child's education or sucess at oral skills become the sole focus of your life.
Definitly be involved, but don't be so involved that when Lilly grows up she thinks " My childhood was just SO filled with therapy, therapy 24/7. My parents were more therapists then real parents."

 :welcome: Hello Lilly's dad, I hope you are enjoying the Alldeaf forum, and getting to meet a lot of wonderful people here. Lilly is really a beautiful daughter, and you are so the proud dad! Lilly is one very lucky little girl to have such wonderful parent's as you both. Have fun posting, and welcome aboard!! :)

Good, good.....does it have a continum of services? Like from self contained classrooms to minmal involvement? I know you're hoping that she'll be able to be MAINSTREAMED, (as in regular classes with minmal things like auditory trainer/speech etc) but just be prepared for the possibilty that she may not acheive that....I know I read somewhere that it's actually pretty common for orally trained kids to have to utilize Sign 'terps in the classroom setting.

Sorry for the long dealy in responding. We do a decent amount of therapy at home. On days when she is not in school we do more. We try very hard not to push it too much. It is very important for her to be a kid first. All of the therapy we do at home is involved around playtime and evening walks. SHe doent even realize that she is learning. We just use her play activities and incorperate speech into them. Evening walks are just talking about what we see and hear.
I do realize that she may not mainstream for several more years. She will go when she is ready. We just wanted her to be in the neighborhood with the kids she will eventually be at school with. This way, when she mainstreams, there will already be friends of hers in class.

Same for us. It'll be 2 years before she'll go to school - when she's 6.
It's important that she will be in school close by in order to get to know the kids.
Being at a school in another part of town will make it more difficult to make friends. It goes naturally when at school close by.

So, the coming year in preschool will be 40% HOH-preschool/kindergarten, 60% hearing only (preschool/kindergarten) Next year, it'll be 100% hearing in preparation for school.

Hi and welcome to alldeaf from Ireland. I too have 3 Deaf daughters, one became deaf at the age of 4 and the other two were born deaf. They all have speech and very little Irish Sign language. We are teaching them every day with new words etc...One of my daughter is very intelligent for her age. She is only 9. The other two is 3 and 16 months old. They all have hearing aids. One them have speech therapy. She goes to it every Wednesday at the clinic. The baby is young won't be start her speech and language at the age of 2. But we are teaching her words like dada, mama etc..she is able to say those words. She has some sign too. Enjoy every moment with your daughter!!
