New Jersey Passed Seatbelt Law for Pets!

I thought this over very carefully since I do have a special love of animals, and I wondered: I never heard of an accident where an unrestrained animal became a flying object that interfered with a drive. I live in a big city with news about almost everything that happens, yet I never heard of this. I tried to find statistics, but couldn't. Is this really a problem?

well there's no statistics but it is true that anything not restrained or secured is a flying object in case of accident - a person, purse, dog, coins, anything.

accident statistic gathered by DOT is this - http://www-fars.nhtsa.dot.gov/Main/index.aspx

I was thinking that too about working dogs. I know my hearing dog would had hate to had wore a seat belt. Finlay likes to watch where I was going . I swear if he could had talk Finlay would let me known if I was going the wrong way! He would sit with his head resting on back of my seat and when he saw I was going the right way he would go lay down. He was a back seat driver!

Talk! That goes back to another thread where they were writing about teaching animals how to sign. With all the laws in place maybe you can get Finlay certified as a guide dog when you driving also. ‘The Finlay K9GPS unit by ronco. Will he fit on the dash?

I wouldn't worry too much about this. We have seatbelt and cellphone laws. How often do they get fined? and I can easily foresee that sooner or later, this law will be revised or repealed.

Around Cheyenne Wy, fines for cell phones and seat belts are a big source of income. This is a state that just past a law 2 years ago that you could not have open beer in a car.

My Lab did try to jump out of the car while it was moving, once. He was sitting in the back seat. I was in the front passenger seat, with my window down. He jumped over my shoulder, out the window. I grabbed his leash and pulled him back in. Let me tell you, a male Lab is not a light weight!

My cats didn't like to ride in the car. One time, one was loose in the car and got under my accelerator pedal! A very dangerous situation. From then on, no matter how much they fussed, they had to be in a kitty crate in the car.

When we had to be in a hurricane evacuation, we were in the car for almost 48 hours. I discovered that the cat stayed calm and in place if he rode in his covered litter box. Not ideal but if it made him happy under a temporary stressful situation, then it was OK.

Years ago, when we had a Pekinese dog, she rode on the front passenger seat of the car with Hubby driving, going to the vet. At a stop light, Hubby was rear ended by a careless driver. Little Ping went sliding off the seat and down into the area under the dashboard. I think the reason that she didn't hit the dash or windshield is because Hubby's car at that time was a Dodge Dart with a raised rear end. That means, the car sloped down and forward.

So, yes, dogs will go flying in an impact, even a minor one.

I have read news articles about traffic accidents where the dogs disappear from the scene. They get thrown out, and in fear, they just start running away. Sometimes they survive the accident but get hit by cars going by. :(

As to the bolded in quote. This has been the case in Illinois since at least the 1950's. Not just beer but any open alcohol in the passenger compartment (not trunk).

and yet it is only a $25 dollar fine (for first offense) for not having a child safely buckled up correctly. NJ has shit priorities...

Yeah, I'm kinda surprised, too. I thought the open alcohol container law had been around for a long time in all states.

another concern was also that a dog inside car can get very protective and prevent rescue workers from retrieving an injured person out.

Could be.

One time, when our Labs were in the back seat of the car, TCS turned on the car radio, which had speakers in the back of the car. It started out with a man's voice speaking. Well, our male Lab pounced on the speaker, barking and snarling at it until it "went away." Yikes!

p.s.

The one time we had to pay a toll with the dogs in the back seat was a nightmare. When TCS rolled down his window, and the toll taker stretched out his hand, our dog leaped into action! TCS threw out the money, which hit the ground, and the toll taker waved us through.
