Welcome to AD. If you like ASL this is definately the place to get supportive advice and answers to questions that arise. We don't all use ASL as primary language, but that only ads to the amount of points of view here. Hope you enjoy our company.
Yes, thank you. I am interested in hearing the HOH perspective, too... Sometimes I have a little trouble if people mumble or slur, or the volume is too low on the TV. I'll be saying, "What did he/she say?" if the captions are off.
If there's lots of folks yakking in a large group and being loud, I can't hear myself think. I miss what is going on unless I'm shouting and then I go hoarse! Too much really loud noise and I'll get a headache sometimes. It gets harder to listen to two conversations going on right next to me when everyone else is being so noisy. I hear part of what they said, but have to say, "What was that? I didn't catch that..."
And bad cell phone connections or mumbling, forget it. I have to answer the phone at work, and I'll hang up if I can't understand them after I tell them we have a bad connection, please try to call back.
I love captions on my TV. I was reading the HOH thread.
My work makes me get my hearing tested yearly and the guy said it's still normal, but it's hard to read those squiggly lines and numbers, it's hard for me to make sense out of the test! One ear has a different squiggly line than the other, so maybe I'm worse in one than the other. Not sure about that.
I went to the dr. because I thought I was going deaf, but turns out I get really bad wax build ups. I have scarring on my right ear drum from ear infections when I was a kid, or so he told me, and my mom said yes, I had ear infections when I was little.
And I hate it when my hubby sneaks up on me (he says he isn't trying to!) and scares the pee-diddle out of me, coming up behind me and I didn't see him or hear him. He appears out of nowhere and I jump.
But I can hear music, bass, and my hubby's snoring if he doesn't turn on his sleep apnea machine! People talking in smaller groups or one on one is fine.
My grandparents have to both wear hearing aids, but their loss is due to age. My grandpa can't hardly understand anyone even with his hearing aids, so he gets really frustrated. He used to do some organizational volunteer stuff with Oregon Dogs for the Deaf program.
I'm a huge animal lover.
Thanks for welcoming me!
