New Kid on the Block
Hello all,
I am very blessed to have found this site. It is wonderful to chat with people who understand the range of feelings that you go through when you find that you are now hard of hearing. I am 54 years old, and my hearing loss started about four years ago. I can't tell you that I have adjusted 100%, but I am learning to re-invent myself everyday.
Hearing loss can be frustrating, however, God gave us abilities that we can tap into, and create a world where we can find comfort in. I started an embroidery business, I write, and love to dabble in graphic arts. Re-inventing myself is hard work, but I am worth it.
I have learned that we have to educate people on how to communicate with me. I have a part-time job where I communicate with people daily. I can no longer do phone work, and that makes finding better employment hard. But I am utilizing my inner skills to make a better world and higher income for myself.
There are times I get down about not being able to hear that well. But I am learning to read lips, and will learn ASL eventually. Having people, friends and especially family who are patient with you is a blessing. We have to train them.
If you have a Vocational Rehabilitation office in your area, use it. Use whatever resources that are available. My Rehab Counselor purchased my hearing aids, no charge to me. And sent me to a business program to start my own business. It cost me nothing but time and hard work on my business plan. I graduated from the program, and Voc Rehab purchased my embroidery machine. There is help out there if you really want it.
God is good to all of us. And I am here to encourage anyone that needs it.
Thanks for reading.
