new hearing aids possibly and more

hey so i have an appt to discuss CI just to have my options open ya know
Oh so it's still in the back of your mind? If you do CI are you going to do bilaterals or just one at first?

um one i guess for now..i have one ear a bit worse than the other and then we'll see:) I can see myself doing well with it because I have been hearing for longer than i've been deaf. If I get a CI I would like to get the new N5

I know they are trying bilaterals at Sick Kids, but I haven't heard of anyone getting a bilateral as an adult.

That's good.....and I mean you still have some usable hearing in your better hearing ear right? That's good that you're keeping an open mind, and aren't " Oh I need to upgrade BOTH!" (the way some people are) I do think that bilateral CIs will be seen, but won't be as common as bilateral hearing aids or even CI plus HA. I think the CI plus HA vs bilateral CIs is going to be a very indivdual thing.

Yes I still have usable hearing in both ears actually..just my right is worse than my left. But i've lost between 60 and 80 dB in both ears in the last 15 months so I don't know if its gonna stop..keep going..be gone the next day so i'm getting the naidas so that i have more powerful aids and then I'll see what happens at the CI appt. I know i will prolly not qualify but I still want to know more about it from the CI audi's POV you know...It's always good to get every opinion and fact. If I have time I also want to enroll (if its fees able) in an ASL class:) I wouldn't want to get 2 CI's right away just in case.

That's awesome you're investigating all the options!
Yes, play it by ear. Is the CI clinic you're going to really good? If you do get approved for CI, maybe see if there.s someone (audi/consumer) you can talk to about using HA with CI....but then again you don't even know if you're gonna get it right?
Are there any colleges in Canada that have a fairly large dhh population? Maybe you could transfer there and learn ASL through osmoisis...just an idea!

Congrats on soon getting your Naidas, Alicia! I hope they work out better for you. :)

*soon* being the key word there I think! I believe she's still waiting for ADP (govn't funding) approval... HURRY UP ADP!!!!
I hope they hurry up and approve you soon!

Ya I have been researching the audi and such but I just find case work. I'm gonna do some more research on the hospital and ones in toronto as well. My audiologist now used to work with many kids with ha/ci so i am lucky there as she has loads of experience. As for the college/university thing unfortunately i go to a private school with a very unique program for what I am taking and there aren't many school in canada that come close to the education I get. I go to Versailles Academy in ottawa (if you wanna google :giggle: ) lol. We have a Canadian Hearing Society not too far that offers classes in the summer and maybe if I volunteer there or something I can get a discount or free ASL classes lol

congrats on soon getting your Naidas, Alicia! I hope they work out better for you. :)

thanks logan! I hope they work better too :)

LOL NO kidding! Stupid ADP...they didn't take this long for my fm and such...but i guess cuz its early replacement they have to make sure i need it etc ...not that anyone with a brain should think otherwise..cuz all u need is 20dB drop in at least 3 frequencies to qualify for early replacement and I have had 60-80dB drop in the last 15 months sooooo i think i more than qualify...stupid government

Hmm i am kinda on the fence with our government..ya it's free health care but it should be some what tiered i think as well and more monitored...The number of ppl that wait in our emergency rooms shouldn't be there. When I lived in the states I think I may have ONCE waited 40 min to get into a room. Our wait times in Emergency are ridiculous especially when you have a life threatening condition like asthma and you have trouble breathing and they are taking the person with a cut on their hand first...like wtf. I mean you pay in the states and it's very unfortunate that some people cannot afford health care in the states and something should be done about it but i'd rather pay and get great health care then get free ok health care while the person on welfare is getting treated better than i am cuz someone has 4 kids and no job and i have 2 jobs and work my ass off...kind of a screwed up system if you ask me

I personally have NEVER been to an ER and had to wait more than 1/2 hour to be seen. I think a lot of people (and im not saying you) form their opinions based on what they see in the news; but theres a problem with that. All of the major canadian newspapers belong to capatalist companies; so naturally they are slightly biased. I also disagree with tiered health care. I took a class in University all about the different styles of health care systems, and the ones with the best health care are the socialist systems, not the systems with private insurance. The systems with universal coverage. If we could have a system like the French I would be all for it!
Just my opinion though, (and slightly off topic)

sooooo i am STILL waiting..rgdgffldgmlfgmlfmgfdmgfmgd...those were all cuss words by the way lol. I don't understand why it's taking soooooo long but my e-mailed my audi today so hopefully she e-mails me back with an answer as to why we haven't heard back from them...I swear...the gov't gets paid to sit on there asses all day and for someone that needs something they take there sweet ass time as well...very annoying. And I've been trying to find online whether or not a Cochlear Implant/surgery is covered in my province and I can't find didly squat on it..only stuff about replacement processors ...i am annoyed :(

Oh good point. CIs must be AWESOME for those who have a progressive late deaf loss!
Still b/c response to hearing technology is so indivdual, I would think that it's best to play it by ear.

Alica, at least you don't desperately need it. (ie you went totally deaf overnight) I would think that CI surgery is covered in your province. It's pretty much the norm for a treatment now. You're also looking into it b/c a) you have progressive loss and b) you've maxed out your hearing aids. You're not " cell phone upgrading" You're upgrading b/c you really need it.
Maybe you're getting the runaround b/c you're not a " need it right now" case.

waiting the ER in America is longer than 40 . I had to wait the whole night with my mother who had cancer and my ex who had crohn's

Now I tell everyone, don't bother going to the ER unless it has something to do with your breathing or you absolutely sure it is an Emergency, you can make an appt. in the morning faster as that's when you usually get finally seen by a doctor in a ER... making an appt. with the general doctor is quick. Getting a referral from your general doctor to see a specialist is also quick.

Now if you are a new patient for a general doctor, it could be longer , maybe up to two weeks depending if they can take new patient. And if you are making an appt. to see a specialist, they usually set your appt. 1 month to 6 months ahead of time. But Urgent care will take you in though without going to the ER.

But if you are havingAsthma or any breathing problems in the U.S. and went to the ER for it, you are usually seen soon as possible.

Where I used to live in maryland I NEVER waited more than 40 minutes in an ER, sorry. And that included injuries like broken bones...but don't want to get in an ER debate haha

DeafDyke- no Im just getting the runaround cuz our gov't sucks lol and I'm only getting the runaround with my new hearing aids not the CI stuff...but ah well. And I e-mailed the CI audi and she said that the surgery, costs, etc is incurred by our gov't so no probs there:) and that canada has approved the N5 internal and external and my centre offers AB and Cochlear. So, I'm happy about that :)
