Hello. I haven't put much personal information together yet, because I was afraid this was a site exclusively for totally-deaf-from-birth people only. I'm glad to see that it isn't.
I'm 24, newly arrived in Louisiana from Tennessee. I'm not deaf yet, but it's only a matter of time. I had chronic ear infections when I was younger. I had drainage tubes put in my ears so many times I lost count (but I know it was double digits), and now my eardums are collapsing from the damage.
I had my hearing checked not long ago, and it showed enormous deficits, which the doctor said are only going to get worse, and I'll be lucky if I'm not totally deaf by the time I'm 40. He said hearing aids won't help. In fact, there's really nothing anyone can do at all.
I've always had trouble hearing, and even though we always knew I was likely to go deaf, I never really did anything about it. I can't read lips and I don't know sign language. I don't even know the alphabet the way my mom and brothers do; I was too busy studying spoken languages like Spanish and Russian to bother with the one it turns out I'm going to need the most.

welcome,

take your time to look around this site and find something that interest you. i hope someone will reply to you who have similiar experiences as yours.

enjoy reading & posting.

:welcome: to AD! U mentioned that u were too busy focusing on learning other spoken languages...that's cool. U can always add another language to learn...ASL. :) I learned it when I was 25 years old myself even though I was born profoundly deaf in both ears.

Enjoy the other threads!

Welcome to AllDeaf, JervisGermane.

Seems a lot of people Tennessee have joined on AllDeaf this year. I grew up in Tennessee just outside of Knoxville.

:welcome: to AD Jervis! I wish I was better at other spoken languages especially spanish, maybe I'll eventually take a college level class. So are you thinking about learning to sign now that you see the importance of it? Have fun with awesome AD community!

Maybe you should consult another doctor. Here is a link to explain tympanoplasty, which means replacing an eardrum.

It is not really uncommon.
