New generation Of CI!

On the other hand....I hate to sound like a spoilsport, but just b/c a company is coming out with new stuff, it doesn't mean that it will be affordable or available to the average consumer. For example there are really high tech wheelchairs and prosethises that are available, which are WICKED good. Unfortunatly the gross majority of insurances don't cover them.

I really would love to know where you get your information from? You can't compare the cochlear implant to durable medical equipment like wheelchairs. It's like comparing apples to beef. It's totally different.

Furthermore, this shows just how little you know about cochlear implants! Once the newer technology comes out, that's all they'll implant and will be available, so the opposite is actually true! Once Cochlear America comes out with the new implant, they'll phase out Freedom implants and exclusively implant with the newer technology.

With backwards compatibility, Freedom users may be able to use the new technology fairly soon, though.

The Naida V has 16 channels, the Exelia has 22 channels. The world of hearing aids is well past the days of 2-3 channels.

Hmm... it's probably a new improved model and they wanted your opinion on what would be recommended for changes.

Exactly, that's what they are doing with the BTE for my generation who cannot use Harmony BTE but the Platinum BTE only.

They probably don't reveal the reason if it's a new technology that would place other companies in competition.

Not only is it kept confidential to avoid competition with other companies... but to avoid biased responses from other testers.

I've done software testing before and we've had to make things confidential for usability purposes. If we shared the results, others would figure out how to work the software.

:hmm:I though Jiro was right about 8 channels that people hear (thats what I was told once too), but at same time like Jenn says there are tons of new HA's that have 16+ channels :dunno: Maybe if SteveAUD could help us with that one if he reads this post. If someone knows I'd like to know whats the deelio with that.

I'm not defending or attacking anyone here, but: DD has very valid point in post#6. Insurance companies 99% of time just suck and are resistant to providing coverage for "first rate" devices or for that regard even prescriptions.

IMO- I am just grateful for the current technology we have at this point, and will continue to advance far, whether or not someone will buy their product. I do not have CI, have consulted with specialist about them, but personally thought about how adaptable the newer and "better" CI or devices will be. I don't know if I even could do my job without HA's as it is. I'm grateful for that.

oh? 6 channels? I actually don't know how many channels mine has. I mean - there are some instruments (especially wind instruments) that have chords with small differences between each other - can be heard by hearing person but not by HA/CI (not always but generally).

There are a number of Hearing aids with more then 6 channels. Here's a few:

Siemens Signia 8
Starkey Aries 9
Sonic Innovations Natura 2
Rexton 3D

Selecting digital hearing aids from Hearing Aid Help

My hearing aids have three channels.

As far as I know, the maximum number of channels for optimal results could be eight . If we pay attention to audiogram data, they usually test eight frequencies. so eight channels might be the maximum number in practice. and not all people need eight or 16 channels

I found some more information about this here Audiology Online: what is the optimum number of hearing aid channels?
