I am new to this site and I wanted to say hello. I am hearing but I want to learn more about the Deaf community and thought I should get the information straight from real Deaf people.
Hello
I'm not deaf but I am mute so I run into a lot of similar challenges and triumphs as people who are deaf. I've noticed that people tend to talk around me, kinda like I'm there but that I'm not part of the conversation. They tend to ask the people I'm with to tell me something for them and then they act sheepishly when my companion(s) tell them that they can tell me themselves lol They mean well and I'm okay with that. It always makes me smile and laugh. Also, despite signing that I'm not deaf, just mute (or writing it down) people will stop speaking aloud and only mouth words to me. It's very rare, thankfully, that anyone has tried to raise their voice, though.
So if you're interested in the perspective of a person who is mute but can still hear I'm your gal <3
And if anyone else on this site is also mute I'd LOVE to talk to you!
