LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - A former prison inmate who says she was shackled at the ankles in an ambulance while in labor prior to the birth of her daughter despite the objections of medical personnel sued the Nevada Department of Corrections on Wednesday.

The suit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, cited what it described as shocking indifference to "wholly obvious, serious medical needs" after the woman's ankles were shackled before and after giving birth in October.

The woman, Valerie Nabors, was being held at the Florence McClure Women's Correctional Center in North Las Vegas for trying to steal about $300 in casino chips, a nonviolent crime, when she went into labor. Nabors, 30, has since been released.

The lawsuit, which alleges violations of state law and Nabors' constitutional rights, said that after she went into labor, guards ran to the ambulance in which she was transported to the hospital and shackled her ankles together, despite protests by ambulance personnel.

Steve Suwe, spokesman for the Nevada State Department of Corrections, would not comment on the case.

The shackles remained on Nabors at the University Medical Center, causing her to stumble when a nurse told her to change into a gown, according to the lawsuit.

Prison guards removed the shackles as she changed and then attempted to put them on again, but a delivery room nurse told them it was not necessary and that "it would make medical history if Ms. Nabors attempted to get away," the lawsuit said.

Guards shackled her again 10 minutes after her daughter's birth. During the following days of recuperation, an attending doctor diagnosed a pulled groin muscle and recommended physical therapy, but Nabors remained shackled and could not carry out the treatment, according to the lawsuit.

The prison also confiscated a medically prescribed breast pump, causing further hardship, the lawsuit said.

Nabors was incarcerated less than a year for attempted grand larceny after attempting to steal the casino chips, said Staci Pratt, legal director at the ACLU of Nevada.

"Anybody who has gone through birth or witnessed it can imagine the challenges and difficulties of giving birth while shackled," Pratt said. "It is a far cry from the common standards of decency and what we expect as a civilized society."

Yeah, kick the guards in the balls and tell them to run and see for themselves.

Why did this pregnant woman commit a crime at a casino? That's the dumbest thing to do. Obviously she didn't think about her unborn child's future when she did it.

What? He's not the one who committed the crime.

If you were talking about him getting her pregnant, the woman is dumber for spreading her legs.

Actually, the father made bad judge by giving her a baby. father should cut off his private thingy before he makes baby suffer.

I find it outrageous for a woman inmate to be shackled when she is about to give birth....She sure as hell isn't going anywhere!...And even the thought of a woman giving birth in handcuffs and shackles makes my blood boil!....

Giving birth is no easy task, we women go thru a lot of pain. The scene of a woman about to give birth, being shackled and her legs on the stirups, spread apart with a chain?....Say what!

She wasn't a violent criminal. Where is the compassion here?

That's not the point. The woman shouldn't commit a crime while she was pregnant. The baby's father has nothing to do with her crime.

You're kidding, right? Ha... ha?
OK, unless you take a birth control or your sexual partner uses a condom, you can get pregnant unexpectedly. Correct? So when you find out that you are pregnant but you are not ready or prepared for it, whose fault is it? YOURS! You spread your legs so you ask for it.

She was arrested for "trying to steal $300 in chips from a casino...a non-violent crime"....

My guess is that you are a guy, right?...Never given birth?...So to let you know, that to have a baby, we do have to spread our legs, both times...one to get pregnant and the other to have a baby...Shackles were restricting the woman from giving birth, actually, it could have caused the death of the baby. You sure as hell don't give birth with your legs closed...

Besides, there were guards there, and a woman who is giving birth, even after the birth, is in no shape to run off...these Guards were really stupid and yeah, I would sue too if it were me.

No baby should ever be Born and take their first breath in life with their mother in shackles and handcuffs. It's inhumane, and the fact she did not commit a violent crime and was no danger to anyone,

Who told you that?

No one. :) seriously, they should have treat her in the right way when she gave birth to baby. No matter waht if she did do crime but did she hurt them no, so let them allow her to have some private time for giving a baby. Nothing else.

Oh, yeah , I agree that she should not be ankle-shackled while giving birth. So she's suing.

My point is that would you commit a crime like stealing while you are pregnant? That's fucking crazy if you would.

That's correct. That's why she's suing.

People commit crimes when they are sane....crazy....drunk...on drugs...pregnant...even kids commit crimes....or for the hell of it...Who's not to say that this woman who was pregnant needed $$ for food, milk, etc.?....So what she did was wrong, of course and she got caught....

So it's not her unborn baby's fault and the baby has the right to be born without shackles that might restrict it being born safely....

That's completely BS....it takes 2 to tango!...Birth control is the responsibility of both...not just the woman....
