I am an asl student and attending my first deaf avent tonight, a crab feed! I am terrified! help!

You probably will.

Be ok with that, do your best, and go to more events.

You will also learn how patient most deafs can be when someone wants to learn ASL. Go to the event. Eat crabs. Make friends.

Who cares if you are sitting there eating crab? Just watch everybody else!

It can only get easier with time. I have been in your shoes up to a point. I am now going to my 4th Deaf Coffee. My group is very patient and wonderful.

scared, scared and scared, brushing up on my nice to meet you signs and finger spelling!!thank god my teacher will be there, how do deaf people view students?

We have no problem with the students at my deaf coffee. there are about 6 of them and 3 drive for 2 hours to get there. I am still working on my ASL and I tend to forget my signs. As long as they know you are trying, most will work with you and accept you.

Depends on the student and their attiude. When you show you want to learn the language and the culture we are more accepting then when you just show up because its required of class... it also depends on how much you try, and how often you show up... if you keep coming, even when it isn't required, then you will be more accepted. We almost always have students at our events here, and they are welcomed with open arms (as long as their attitude is good!). The only time I have seen them as an "outsider" is when they can't seem to keep their voice off and their singing on... when a group of them stay to themselves and don't sign... its harder for us to see you really want to be a part of the community... good luck tonight. Keep cool and be pacient with yourself too.

Good luck with it but don't worry it will get better after attend event few more time then they get to know you.

Deafies are not that crabby. You will be fine to interact with them, they won't pinch you.
