Neighbours complain deaf couple is too loud - The Local

A deaf couple have decided to move out of their apartment in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia after neighbours complained they were just too loud.

Mike Dumröse, 34, und Natascha Neitzel, 25, have lived together in the city of Hagen for about six months now. Deaf from birth, they communicate through sign language.

They also enjoy music by turning songs up full blast in order to feel the vibrations in the walls and floor.

But all the noise has annoyed neighbours, according to the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ).

“They’re too loud. The other renters have constantly complained,” their landlord Achim Hengesbach told the WAZ.

When the couple found out about the complaints, they were so upset that they decided to leave their apartment and set up a tent at a local park.

City officials who found them there felt bad about their situation and moved them to a hotel while the couple searched for, and eventually found, a new place to live, the WAZ reported.

Now there are a few nights to go at their old apartment. They’re spending it watching TV and sleeping on an old mattress in a bare room. But they’re not turning up the music in celebration.

And though a bit embarrassed, they don’t seem to bear any ill will toward others for all they’ve been through.

“Love. Luck,” wrote Neitzel when asked by the WAZ what they hope to achieve in their new accommodation, without saying whether they’ll be playing music there.

 Didn't think it would spread this far.

Well, in this case...Deaf people here aren't too thrilled about this article. Common reaction from hearing people is something like: "We pay for them, they don't know how to behave - great:roll:"
The papers say they were told many times, that the music was too loud and that they couldn't turn it up at certain hours and they just ignored that fact. If that's true, no wonder they got kicked out.

Latascha, Miss Delectable always find articles that had to do with Deaf around the world and posts them here. I don't know how she does it. Googling?

Um.. a small correction here is needed. See the bolded? The deaf couple didn't know about the complaints for a while and when they found out about the complaints, they decided to move out. They weren't kicked out.

The other tenants complained to the landlord - not to the deaf couple. Clearly, he/she didn't tell the Deaf couple about it for a while.

I've read some articles about that, and there it always said, that the landlord send several messages to the deaf couple and that he did kick them out.
The article in the WAZ points that out, too. According to that paper, the city officials who found them in the tent talked to their former landlord so that they were able to stay at their home until the end of the month.
Okay, the whole article was kind of strange, but if it is true what the paper said no wonder why they had to move.

Hey, that deaf couple should be living in my town - it's nearly impossible to evict tenants :)

I would not help, but if music is sooo loud that I would feel it, then I would be careful about playing it. I would not want to piss off anyone. Deaf or not, a common courtesy is to not play loud music. They knew it was loud, but they did nothing about it until other tenants complained. I would not go that far. I would not want to make anyone complain.
