Kia Ora,

I'm a Master's student drinking too much coffee :eek3: and I need some input from people who're in the know. I'm researching sign language law and rights. I am particularly interested in New Zealand, UK, Finland, Sweden, Uganda and South Africa.

If you have an experience with how a law or policy from your country has benefited and protected your sign language rights or conversely you have been discriminated against because of a law, I'd love to hear from you regardless of the country you come from. please share your story with me , either email me at linguisticlaws@hotmail.com or post to this board.

Herzlich Willkommen in AD.. huch, you drank coffee too much. me too, I might invite you to starbucks. I love Machiatto with Caramel ;)

I'm Swedish, so I might be able to help. I am hearing however, so asking a Deaf Swede is probably better, but I could point you in the right direction.

The first thing you want to do is go to the website of The Swedish National Association of the Deaf, where they have plenty of info on the status of Swedish Sign Language (which was legally recognized as Deaf Swedes' native language in 1981) and related topics. All the content on the website is available in English, and you might find someone there that you can contact.

Another place to look is the Swedish Sign Language division of the Linguistics Department at the University of Stockholm. They might also know who would be good for you to talk to. Their page is in Swedish only, but the department page is in English. Good luck!

thanks everyone
