how about try sourcing the book "little planet" or 'small planet"ahh i think its called "lonely planet" its a tourist guide a compact, thick book but easy to navigate thru, it covers alot, it would be a Great starting point in terms of a reading material to begin with.

from top of my head, you could consider, the worlds largest building (temple)
, a samuri (katana) makers den... if you can find im sure there be alot of places but very are really really good...and the best are probably kept secret (kill bills probably messed me up lol)
find some wicked good places for bonsai trees, car factory museum, electronic 'heaven' in tokyo i think its famous, , metropolicitican building - largest tokyo building, bullet train ofc
