You too? I've had that happen also. I did contact the airline to let them know that deaf people do not need wheelchairs. I don't think I saw an escort the last time I rode that airline (and I deplaned 3 times on that trip), so maybe they took care of that "glitch".Planes and airports are horrible... well to me anyway. Most airports do have those "monitor boards" (much like a tv) that lists incoming and outgoing flights and will show if they're boarding or delayed. I don't like them because in some airports they're too high for me to see and other airports they're somewhat at eye level but I still gotta get up close to read- too small font size.
The gates do have electric boards but I can't remember right now if they actually state they're boarding. They almost always verbally announce it and always "Rows 20 to 25" blah blah blah. So.. for me when I start seeing people line up I get in line anyway. I just say I'm deaf and can't hear the announcement (if my seat is not the section they called)- they usually just let me go. Could tell the agent at the counter but half the time they forget.
What was nuts... one time I noted I was deaf on a reservation via online. Landed at my connecting airport...and got an escort (!?!) errm... okay.
I always go to the gate agent and let them know I'm HoH/deaf. At one airport, she immediately asked if I signed and when I said no, she pulled out a pen and wrote some info for me on my ticket. She also told me I could board with the other pre-board people (mobility handicapped, families, etc) and told me where to sit (near the gate) so that I would get the "time to board" from them.
