Which hearing aid is the best?

Which hearing aid is the best?

Only a qualified audiologist or hearing instrument specialist can tell you what the best hearing aid is for you. And even then it can take trying different ones to meet your specific needs.

Extension to the user of Hearing aids to those with "some degree of hearing loss" re: ASL/BSL et al utilization from prior comments re Cochlear Implants?

Why are you on the Hearing Aid/Cochlear Implant board.....it's getting old, very old....

Sign language sucks......

Because this is all Ddeaf forum. and i am Deaf.
there is a manufactured dependence regarding hearing aids and cochlear implants. The multi national companies reeping huge profits and for the most part resemble pharmaceutical companies In every way, perticularly how they sink vast sums into martketing their product by convincing people they are a need, to live life fully, without their product life isnt lived..so on so forth.... im here to simply point oUt. No one needs to be dependent on these technologies. and sign bieng the superior technology. As its rooted in the power of the human mind, as opposed to a battery and the whims of multi nationals whos interest is profit first and formost....thus i offer sign, as an alternative to dependence. I offer sign for those wish to better inform thelmselves snd make better choices.sign will (refer to my sig)
why do you feel so threatened by me? To attack my language?
I have not attacked yours.
Is sign language such a threat to your closed world view?
As for my post. It was half in jest. As i knoW the op signs, but i also wanted to provoke a discusion. Sure for some hearing aids and cochlears will allow one to hear a fart, or fhe soothing song of ozzy osbourne...
I grant you that
But sign, the freedom it offers to those willing, is far far deeper and profound..thus i suggest to those with aids, to learn sign, its not an either or, one is fickle and. Mere band aid, or mask a crutch that breeds dependence (aids, cochlear), the other offers complete freedom snd bridges the chasm of deafness as a loss, to one of Deafness as a gift..sign. i suggest to tbose wishng an inplant they dont need it. and not to do it. Sign will(refer to my sig)
Thank you for asking.

The old saying of, "Only an Audiologist can determine the best hearing aid for you", is actually a load of horse-hockey.

Hearing aids are not prescription medication that can kill you if you take the wrong one. My coworker knew nothing about hearing aids, when he needed one a few years ago. So, he went to an Audi, and the Audi was staunch in recommending a certain brand. He wanted a second opinion, so he went to another Audi, and he then recommended a different brand and model. Each one gave him a couple different ones to try, but he was never satisfied. He felt like he was being boxed in by each Audi he went to. Like a car salesman trying to push the certain models they sell.

Eventually, he tried Costco, and the Audi there did not get paid on commission. She let him literally try 4 different HA's they carried for his level of hearing loss, and finally found the one he wanted, which I think was a Rexton. He bought his from there because his insurance did not cover a HA, and so he saved a little money as well.

He told me about Costco after I ran into a problem with my daughters Audi, because even though my daughters Audi let her try a couple different kinds, he didn't want her going to Costco because he told her the HA's had less features. This I am not really buying into, but the ones labelled "Kirkland" do have a few different features than the comparable models, but they still have identical sound quality. Well, after trying out a few kinds, my daughter got the Kirkland HA they carry for half the price of a comparable HA, which is actually made by Resound. It also works with the wireless accessories for cochlear implants, because she now has a CI in her other ear. The sound quality also meets her personal preference. The price for us was not the biggest factor, because our insurance does cover HA's. But still, it was half the price compared to a private Audiologist.

I am not going to say "Don't go to a private Audiologist", because not everyone has a Costco, or other options available. Like anyone, Audiologists have a business to run as well. They work and earn their paycheck just like the rest of us. If you have a personal Audi nearby, and the convenience is your preference, then by all means go to them for your needs. The Audi my daughter has for her cochlear implant, is a fine Audiologist, he just didn't have the HA I wanted my daughter to try.

In the end it is your decision. Every HA brand out there makes a top end model that will have many different features. It is up to you to try out several, and find the one you like best for your personal needs, and in my friends case, not the model that maximizes the Audiologists paycheck.

In our case, my daughter and I found the HA she liked the most as well, not her Audi.

that would actually be up to you and your audiologist to decide that. If you can, try different hearing aids. One brand will be the best for one person while another brand works the best for another person. There is no one size fits all.

Yeah , I wish I had learned sign language as a child. I thinks kids can learn things faster they have less things going on in their mind.

if only I knew what future held i wish i had....i learnt best by being with deaf went on rehab then spent week or more with deaf lady,if i wanted to eat i had learn quick..i was 30 then easier. i could not learn now as they say don't use it you lose it

I have no one to use ASL with now so it would be no point in relearning it.
When I lived in Berkeley there were more deaf and hoh people there and I was going to a center for deaf and hoh people. I was in my 30's by the time I learned ASL but once I moved back east I did not go back to classes . So I had forgotten most of everything but I still know how to say turtle !
But It's hard to commutate only knowing 'turtle'. :giggle:

Never too late caz12, never too late...

i am fluent in bsl but out of the loop these days and deaf community in my town made up of two teenage boys and me few young kids on my own a bit..when go into London i back in the social flow but don't go so often..i stay with Turkish friend she in Essex she half BSL other Turkish and Kurdish all go into the pot we have good laugh

Yeah turtle will only get you so far hahah
No deafies in masashutes...(how ever its spelt) also, obviously now A days the net is very much a tool to use re learning ASL and retaining it, and spreading it. and all sign languages to various degrees re vid, skype, and now have giide ecct.. . I grant if you do not live amongst t human biengs and am alone in a cave with only animals for conpany...with no net, then sign certainly has limits. Because sign needs humans to actually work, (granted dogs can learn hundreds of signs but thats just a one way path), but
If you actually do live amongst human biengs, and those human biengs can actually see, then sign very much can work to overcome and bridge the chasm of deafness as a curse to become Deaf as a gift.
but yeah
with cats, repriles, spiders, racoons, fish, birds , cobras, pigs, cows, , ect sign doesnt much work.
My argument rests on human beings...

My dogs know signs. With Joe who is now blind as well as deaf we rely on stomping on the floor and physical contact, but I have never had a dog who couldn't learn basic signs.

I included dogs but pooches can only be receptive, granted one time i swore i saw paws signing clayton vallis dandylions...(shakes head..rubs face)
Alas
I woke up...
Weird dream all round..
Dogs can retain a few hundred signs..depending on breed and how smart ass the pooch is

hoichi: On my screen is ALLDEAF.COM,

I am well aware there some deaf persons who don't/can't benefit from the use of either Hearing aids/Cochlear Implants. Thus the use of sign language ASL/BSL et al. Such is life.

aside: I am still bilateral DEAF if I disconnect my Cochlear Implant-real quiet!
