there are many speech-to-text apps but I haven't found one that I can use in a conversation around a table that picks up the speech. A person has to almost be talking right into the phone for those to work. Any apps out there that can pick up a conversation at a short distance like in a coffee shop conversation?

I think Transcribe Live app is probably the best one out there. I think someone from Gallaudet created this app.

That site says that Google partnered with Gallaudet University to develop it.
I am still looking for the best way to use it. I do seem to get a better result by using a mic on a cord plugged into the earphone outlet. That way the mic can be closer to the other person/people but the screen on the phone where it is easy to see to read. There are still errors with my setup but that helped. Yesterday I saw a doctor who has English as her second language (at least — I don't know if she knows more than 2) and is good with English and her side of the conversation did not come in as clearly as mine.
I had a mixed experience with Live Transcribe yesterday, May 26, 2019.
My Pastor spoke from different parts of the Sanctuary during the service and just by having the corded mic pointed at him and the screen turned to read it easily his part of the service came in quite well. Part of the time it was really quite a distance across the room and others really by me.
Then 6 of us went to lunch after the service. I was the last one to get there and had to sit at the end of the table that had 3 of us on each side. It did help with the gal the was sitting next to me whom I always have trouble lip reading in addition to the sound my hearing aid gives me. The others it seemed that I could not get pointed directly enough at one individual to pickup clearly enough to really help. I am thinking I need to see what happens if I can get the middle seat on one side when the group is seated that way. Getting conversation was also not helped by my dirty eye glasses and the glare from facing the big windows at the front even on a mostly cloudy day.

Try https://otter.ai too -- it has a webapp, iOS app, and Android app.
Although the text size is smaller, it does a better job in certain situations -- it has been around for much longer than Google Live Transcribe and has an iOS app.
A MacBook Pro with a microphone attached, successfully transcribed directly in Chrome/Safari browser. Or my iPad held up to the microphone.
It works even better if you purchase an external microphone for your laptop, tablet or phone, and use very good LTE reception. Transcription of business meetings at work is also greatly helped with something like a Blue Yeti microphone sitting in the middle of the room.
