Nearly tripped the fire alarm here

The boiler pan come with a tray that fit on top and it has small holes so the grease can drip down into the pan . This so you don't start a grease fire in the oven and it keep the grease from spitting onto the boiler heating element. I could not use my boiler because of ex husband cooking his meat the wrong way , it too smoky . I do not care about getting messy, I am more concern about getting grease on the boiler heating element , that is a lot harder to clean than a dirty pan.

Seriously the grease doesn't go anywhere, it stays in the pan, you put it in a cold oven then turn it onto 400, middle rack, it's not close to the elements its not splattering or leaking anywhere. Baking not broiling.

I cook my bacon by baking also. Very easy and no mess..Best part is.. all the bacon are hot when eating it instead of doing it few at a time..

I can't imagine he has fire alarms, those have to be pulled. He's talking about smoke detectors.

I used to have a condo that had smoke detectors in the hallways that if they were triggered to fire department was notified, but not the ones inside the apartments, just the common hallways. Maybe since this is a halfway house or something for the mentally ill they're hooked into the system, but I can't imagine them fining people for burning their dinner. That's beyond stupid and completely different from pulling a fire alarm.

A false alarm, for a fire alarm is fine able. I had a friend who's 3 yo daughter pulled one at the laundry mat and the owner wanted him to be the fine she was going to get for the false alarm, but it wasn't 1k either, it was more like $100, regardless though it's a completely different situation. Mark is either a)very confused or b) full of it.
It's possible that the residents are given an orientation lecture that emphasizes not making intentional false alarms (such as pranks) in order to obtain compliance, and Mark took it to heart. (Some people personalize and exaggerate everything.)

False alarms at his building might have been a problem in the past, so management might have tried the scared straight approach.

Yup, and it's $1,000. I'd rather not, thanks.

When I was health aide I had client that lived in a low income housing and there was huge sign posted on her kitchen wall , the sign said "you
can not use the stove at any time, do not go near the stove Go downstairs and have your health aide cook for you. It was bold letters telling my client to stay away from stove . The wall was all black from the fires she started while cooking. If my client uses the stove she would had moved out and she living on the streets before moving into the building. I bet the fire department was going to her apartment a lot . The fire alarms where set up to fire department . I liked the woman she was a real character but she very forgetful too. I pity anyone the is forgetful and lives in your building.

This is very likely. I read the article and the fine was like 100 for the 4th false alarm then up to 200 for sonething else, I forget, but not 1000 for one offense. Also according to the article most of the alarm set ups like this are in high rises and conduminiums. He lives in a house, I'm fairly certain the only reason it's equipped like this is because it's housing the mentally ill. Yeah, I can see this being a problem, not just people intentionally burning stuff, but being on meds that made them distracted easily. I worked with a guy that was severely bipolar and in lithium. My God, you could only give him one thing to do at a time or he'd be lost. I can see that being a problem in the past.......

LOL *smh* Been there, but the next time you got a smoker you can easily contain, put it out and throw a wet towel over the smoke detector. That will buy you some time to ventilate your place.

This is no joke. This is why we get hit with these fines.

That isn't why you get hit with fines ... the box in that pic is the "brain" or command module for an alarm system ... it probably is wired into the phone line as well to automatically send the fire alarm in if set off ... all the smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors(if installed) are tied into that box ...

as far as fines go ... the first few false alarms at a location WILL NOT be fined ... but if it continues the fines will start low and go up the more false alarms there are ... they don't just fine $1000 for the first false alarm ... period ... if another resident of that halfway house sets off a few false alarms and isn't fined but given warnings then someone else does and is fined $100 even though its their first false alarm doesn't matter its still false alarms from the same location/house.

How would you keep the towel from falling off the ceiling? And if you live in an apartment the landlord may not want people to be putting wet towels on his ceilings .

If the smoke detector is wired into the house power and the towel is dripping wet that water could get down into the wiring and short it out or start a fire itself.

No, seriously. It was a wall detector, good luck on the ceiling though! Of course not drenched, definitely would arce the detector. It was a damp towel I used, but keep in mind, it's not foolproof either.

I was making myself an early lunch, and once I finished, a bunch of smoke came out of the pan, and knowing that our fire alarm automatically alerts the Fire Department, I didn't wanna get hung with a $1,000 fine, so I opened the window and back doors, and let the smoke out before the alarm tripped. However, I closed the door, but left the window open, just in case. I've had experience doing this before, but let me make one thing clear-- I am not great at cooking bacon.

lol $1,000? trust me... no.

I might also add that many of us are deep sleepers, and this house is also equipped with fire alarm bed shakers. Those are required here in IL (I think).

Wasn't me who got hit with it-- my housemates and I guessed that this particular house had a past history of tripping the alarm, and that was long before any of us were here. I know very little about this house, but what I know is that this house does have a violent past, and that's it. They said the details were too gruesome.

I think your house would be a terrific setting for a reality TV show!

Well, I did as sonocavito suggested, and cooked it on low heat, and guess what? no smoke whatsoever when I made bacon last night. Now I know what to do next time. :)

Someone mentioned it before but I'm not scrolling to find it ... you can use a microwave ... take a microwave safe plate and put 2 or 3 paper towels on the bottom then lay each slice of bacon side by side till its full or how ever much you want ... then put 2 paper towels on top and stick in the microwave ... you'd have to experiment with how long to cook it on how you like your bacon crispy or not ... start with 2 minutes and check it and microwave in 1 minute increments longer till its to your liking ... the paper towels soak up the grease and once they cool just toss them in the trash and no oil in a pan to dispose of after ...

I'll have to try that.

Note to self: buy a microwave safe plate and paper towels.

Any ceramic plate or glass dish as long as theres no metal on it at all .... they do have microwave trays you can buy to use for bacon but a regular plate will do and is cheaper ... (just no metal) heres a link to a bacon tray like I used to have if you use one like that no paper towels on the bottom its designed to drain the grease away just cover it before cooking..

Are you really serious? I can't believe that you will fined for smoke during cooking. :ugh:
