My thoughts on Deaf Education

Dear OP and Everyone else,

I apologize for being rude earlier. I still think Shushugah's point about articulation is correct, especially when discussing about higher education, and also for the first-timers reading those posts and forums. Does anyone remember Matajan and his posts about higher education? I wasn't really intending to criticize her in the manner you were thinking of, but rather trying to self reinforce the public image of deaf people.

I personally have to do that everyday in college/workplace, and I am not being haughty when I say this, but it's a very sensitive and delicate task to do, because most people have a negative stereotype of the deaf, which is part inaccurate but also a logical perception, based on posts like this one and others.

And another correction, I was only asked to speak on a panel AGBell sponsored about deaf accommodations in college and the college application process. That's it. My "sense of superiority" does not come from my association with AGBell. I was never involved with AGBell at all except this event and the scholarship.

Grummer, there's good and bad to Asian parenting, just as there's good and bad to "American" parenting, and I am a product of Asian parenting, but I believe I have turned out fine. I am an independent adult who is able to fend for myself.

And with a good reason. Many of the Deaf have had terrible experience with English class and it would be cruel to act like this is English class here on this forum.

As for Shushugah, I have a cochlear implant but i do not support AGBell.

I know this sounds and is harsh, but I rather be open about it then deny the reality, but that kind of rhetoric gives reason for non deafies to look down on the deaf, the same way people with autism won't ever get full respect and esteem of non autistic people. Luckily I was a 6x winner in Debate and Model congress, which really gave a huge positive impression on the hearing community, because these are 5% logic and research, but 95% communications and persuasive and speaking skills.

Gee, you're very empathic.

My daughter has never encountered anything but support from AGB, and she is signing deaf.

Their services, legal support, interpreters, research, legislative support are all there for all d/Deaf.

Oh? Perhaps you could do a search of the archives and find the Pepsi commercial controversy of a few years ago. Hardly support for all deaf.:cool2:

Nor is their refusal to award scholarships to signing deaf students who have achieved academic success being there for all deaf.:cool2:

Assuming what GrendelQ said wasn't true, (or for sake of argument), what you said now is not the same thing as earlier which was saying they are anything but a selfless and caring organization. I can agree with you that they need a name change....but that's just a name change, and not much more. I cannot comment how they treat Deafies, because, I don't have any first hand experience, but I am happy to hear from GrendelQ, :D

The name change would remove the hypocrisy. It is the hypocrisy that most object to.

I'm a non-deafie, and I don't judge the deaf by their English grammar.

I am not autistic, and I have a great deal of respect for those that suffer from autism.

It is good that you saw the need to apologize. But it is truly a shame that the rest of your post just cancelled it out and showed that it was insincere at best.

I can think of at least one poster here who's both deaf and autistic.

I am stating the reality, and if you find the english classroom to be a nuisance and a pain, and I am not discussing say Oxford english course, then yes the non deafies aren't going to look upon the deafies as equal partners. Jilio, both you and I know that your graciously tolerant views are not shared by the majority of the world. If the deaf community, which i am part of, wants to change their public face, they have a lot of work to do. It's smilar to the minority black and hispanic communities, which are looked down upon for the most part.

I posted a link yesterday to a link related to Pepsi's stupid letter indicating a wish that the commercial had represented all deaf, not just signing deaf, along with my negative view of the position taken by AGB's board. Because of the letter writing campaign by many members, the org acknowledged publicly that it's membership was evenly divided on the subject and the letter didn't represent the majority view, and that person who sent the letter is no longer in a leadership role.

I'd agree that the organization is heavily focused on promoting spoken language. I don't think that makes them discriminatory towards signing deaf. That doesn't obviate the broad range of services and resources available to all deaf. I'm a member of NAD. I'd say the org. is heavily focused on ASL. I don't think that makes them discriminatory towards non-signing deaf.

Again though, you don't go back and analyze the men whose names are lent to Ford, Chevy, JPMorgan, and judge the car, the bank based on whatever political perspectives were held by those founders.

And the deafies come to this forum to get away from the majority of audist society and be comfortable and with those who share not just their circumstances, but their beliefs. They deal with audism every day of their lives in that "real world" you speak of. To bring that same attitude to a deaf message board is extremely insensitive and innappropriate.

How can they, in good conscious, request that Pepsi include all deaf when they themselves fail to do so. As I said, hypocisy.

However this thread, which I didn't start, was about promoting the deaf public image to the general community, therefore I have every right to discuss this topic. If this topic offends you, or others, that's a separate issue. As a minority Jew, and socialist in my surroundings I have to defend those views, as well as perceptions accurate or not.

You ignored the other post, which apparently shows how both bipartite members are accepted. I fail to see how it's hypocrisy, other than its founder, but that was a long time ago.

As for my personal view on the pepsi....not a big deal, :P

Incorrect. This thread was a sharing of one individual's experience with deaf education. It was created as a vent. And did not need attacking by those whose own grammar fails to meet the standards of perfect.

Sweetie, you don't know what a minority is, when compared to my own ethnicity.:laugh2:

I ignored nothing. And passage of time has changed nothing when it comes to the philosophy of A.G. Bad and their hypocrisy.

I presume you don't face as much bigotry if your minority is so minuscule?
