My middle-schooler is now a candidate for CI -HELP!

I think it's important to understand a person's hearing history and use of hearing aids prior to implantation to know why they aren't receiving any benefit from a CI. I can understand the fact that Shel doesn't question any of the people she knows, but I'm just pointing out that this information can tell us alot about why they don't benefit from a CI.

It's important for people reading this thread to understand that there are many, many different factors that determine how well someone does with a CI. If the adults and children you knew had little or no benefit from hearing aids for a long time, didn't attend regular mappings, didn't wear their CI regularly and didn't have AVT, all of these things can contribute to the fact that they didn't receive any help from a CI. Aside from that, those who receive no benefit from a CI are a minority.

I am not going to speculate on each person's possible reasons for why they couldnt benefit from their CIs..just saying that I know children and adults who dont get any benefit from them...that's all I am saying. Sorry, I dont have more information.

The results of CI vary from person to person. This is why it's important to have realistic expectations (or as we say in the CI world, "High hopes, low expectations").

Subject: Person does not benefit from CI.

pro-CI person: "He most likely didn't do the mapping/adjustments and probably wore it just for a short time."

anti-CI person: "When are people going to realize that CI is NOT a miracle? It doesn't always work. And this is just another indication of proof."

Being a pre-lingually profound deaf person who just got the CI, I can see where both sides are coming from. However, I have to say that I lean towards the pro-CI side because if I stopped therapy right now, I only got the benefit of hearing a lot of environmental sounds but still little speech discrimination. And it's been 3 months. I can see why people would give up by now....

By saying that, u are speculating that I am anti-CI? Is that a correct assumption?

...which I said I understood. I also said it's important to understand why a person doesn't receive any benefit from a CI since this plays a vital role in determining why this is the case.

Shel, as a teacher, don't you receive a summary of a student's hearing history? When I had itinerant teachers in public school, they had access to my medical history regarding my blindness.

I never said students, didnt I? I said adults and children...could mean anything. I have stated a million times before, I have some students who were able to benefit from their CIs and some who havent . However, when I speak of adults and children, I am talking about acquantaices, former college peers, children I have met at Deaf events, and students. Just in general. I am not going to list my students' histories here. Sorry.

Of course not!

I am classifying the typical responses to YOU. Two people have responded in a pro-CI way. No one has responded anti-CI yet, but we've all seen it before. I am not saying that people who are pro-CI are ALWAYS for CI, just as people who are anti-CI are ALWAYS against CI.

When you said "I know someone who didn't benefit from the CI.", there is pretty much only 2 ways to take it: it's probably the user's fault or it's probably the CI's fault. Hence the pro-CI and anti-CI thinking.

No one is asking you to reveal the hearing history of your students. Who asked you to do that? Not me. :dunno:

I dont know...just saying there are people out there that dont benefit from them. Not gonna put blame on anything or anyone...that's all.

I just dont care for them..if someone wants one, kudos to them..if someone doesnt want one, kudos to them...

Your post makes one wonder if you are anti-CI. It would have been nice if you would have clarified your position by saying, "I know people who have and haven't benefitted from their CIs."

See post #53

You also said in post #49:

"I know some people who got a CI and really couldnt get any benefit at all from them. *shrug*"

Yep...it is true or should I lie about them and act like they dont exist? Dont they count at all as CI users?

What would be nice is if you could begin by stating, "I know people who have and haven't benefitted from the CI" instead of initially saying, "I know people who received no benefit from their CI. *shrug*" and then amend your statement by saying, "I know people who received no benefit from their CI. I also know some people who received good benefit."

Why should I when I have made soooo many posts about both kinds of CI users?

I cant make posts to please everyone but the point is in post #53 and many others in previous threads, I have always stated about both success and failures stories..

Sorry that I cant always please everyone at all times...but I post what I was thinking at the time. Not always gonna make everyone happy at all times...imposssible.
