Hi everyone,

My husband has really bad constant ringing in his ears that won't go away. A doctor gave him a hearing test about 9 or 10 months ago and the results were normal. She told him if he stopped smoking the ringing would probably stop. He quit smoking 11 weeks ago but the ringing is still there and even a little worse. Could this ringing still be a sign of hearing loss or possibly going totally deaf? I was just wondering if anyone here has had a similar situation?
I would so much appreciate anyone's advice!

Thanks so much!

Elsie

Get a new doctor. Ringing is the often first sign of hearing loss.

I would see a doctor. High blood pressure can cause the ears to ring as well.

I was thinking that also.

Definitely see a doctor and get his blood pressure checked. Smoking make high blood pressure, so that's likely why the dr was advising to quit smoking?

If the doctor says his blood pressure and all health stuff is fine.. it may be something he has to live with. Noone really knows what exactly causes tinnitus I think. Sometimes high blood pressure, sometimes accompanied by hearing loss or a precursor to it, sometimes just there. Either way it's annoying.

Best thing for the OP do is have her husband go for a second opinion by a physician.

Another thing to consider is that there are a number of medications which can cause or exacerbate tinnitus. Also things such as caffeine, chocolate, sugar, artificial sweeteners, "energy drinks", dehydration, lack of sleep, stress and other things can also cause/increase tinnitus.

If any of these apply to your DH: talk to a pharmacist for any medication questions, consider reducing or eliminating food/drink related items and make changes to improve sleep quality and reduce stress if applicable. Also make sure that he is well hydrated (straight water if possible).

When he was younger, did he listen to loud music or attend rock concerts? Youthful damage can take years to catch up :P

Other than that, I agree with what others have said about tinnitus being caused by high blood pressure and diabetes and some other diseases. Your husband should get a whole body check up and blood work. I am assuming your husband's doctor has ordered blood work already?

Also, whatever changes he makes will take time for the tinnitis to reduce or drop, depending on what caused it. 11 weeks is not enough.
