Thompson said Entergy has made restoring power to hospitals and other essential buildings in the recovery effort their first priority. He said that part of the process may take a couple days.

In Union County, about 1,000 Entergy customers are without power near Strong. Thompson says restoring power to all customers there could take a day or two.

Tornado Strikes Dumas, Dozens Injured
Today's THV - KTHV Little Rock News Article

Severe thunderstorms spawned a string of tornadoes across southeastern Arkansas Saturday afternoon, destroying homes and buildings and injuring dozens of people.

Dumas Mayor Marion Gill says 27 people were injured in the tornado that hit the town's business district and nearby neighborhoods. Emergency crews called in ambulances from a neighboring county to help transport the storm victims.

A Fred's Dollar Store in Dumas was left in a tangle of twisted metal and crumbled concrete blocks, and an overturned tractor-trailer rested in its parking lot. A Mad Butcher grocery store also suffered heavy damage along with a nearby McDonald's. A plant that produced pet food was also heavily damaged. The storm's path was reportedly 5 miles long and up to a half-mile wide.

James Robinson, 33, of Winchester says he pulled into the McDonald’s parking lot in Dumas and ran from his car when he saw the black cloud coming. Robinson says he helped a woman inside, and hid with others in the restaurant's walk-in freezer until the storm passed.

"It sounded just like a locomotive track, not real fast," recalled Robinson.

Immediately after the storm, some residents were unaccounted for and police were making a door-to-door search.

A power substation was destroyed and electricity was out in the area.

A shelter for storm victims was set up at First Baptist Church in Dumas. A handful of people were spending Saturday night there. The Red Cross is asking for blood donations.
