my friends thought...

I think the idea is that if you get pulled over or there is a license check then the police officer will know you are deaf, so they don't think you are being rude or uncooperative by asking them to repeat things or not responding.

That's exactly what i meant! I think it would be a good system to implement!

Instead of walking with the traffic, you should walk against it so you can see cars coming towards you.

As for the police... Perhaps when more people become deaf, and it becomes an issue, we will see changes. But, hopefully they won't introduce something visual (such as a sticker) that easily identifies deaf drivers.

I wouldn't want a sticker on my car to know im deaf but i wouldn't mind it on my licence card or in police system or watever.

I've never thought about walking against traffic..good idea! lol

HC parking sign?! No thanks! I, also, was never asked that question as of yet! haha. I think out of habit, I just walk against the traffic to see the car since I must see the cars. Just a common sense thing, I guess? I also don't have any idenification on my vehical or driver license that say that I'm deaf. When a police pulls me over, I just follow the standard rules of staying in the car and hands on the wheels til the police person approaches the window and THEN I tell the police that I'm deaf... they will figure a way to communicate with me... usually they would pull out a pad of paper and pen and start scribbing. Never had a problem with a police as far... *knocks on the wood*

Here in NZ it is called mobility parking so only applies to people with mobility issues, and being deaf doesnt make you crippled does it. I did have one for my mum before she passed away, very useful too, however it has expired now.

As far as signs on cars go , that would be a big no no for me, imagine all the arrogant hearies tooting away just to see if you could hear them.

I did have an old mate aske me a while back if I carried a card to say I was deaf, I asked him why should I, he reckons if the police pull me up they could think I am drunk from my speech........well swift response to that one was to ask if he carried a card to say he was a dork!

Only been pulled up couple of times and no problem explaining to officer that I am deaf, fortunately our police dont carry guns so no chance of being mistaken for a smarty and shot at!!!!

Does anyone get a special symbol or anything on their license to say hoh or deaf like that symbol with the ear and the slash through it? I think that is a good idea to have on your license card.

I would not suggest to having special symbol on driver's license because if your license has been stolen or lost and the person will check your license to see where you live and might be rob, rape, murder or whatever they do once they find out that you are deaf so they can take advantage of your deafness, HOH, or whatever. Bad IDEA!!!! But good idea about info in police system to let them know but not on the license please!!!!!!!!! LOL

Actually, they do have something on licenses that verify that you're deaf... just not with a symbol or icon. It's usually a letter under "restrictions".

I think that these licenses should have something like that (just letters, not symbols), so that they can verify that you are indeed deaf. They do the same for those who wear glasses. If a cop pulls you over, you have to prove that you are disabled. A sticker on your car is something that anyone can get. But a restriction on your license is something strictly for you and something that is verified by the department of public safety.

Worried about losing your license? That will only happen if you aren't careful. Having a license is like having everything else you own. You have to be careful with what you have and not lose them.

Losing a credit card is worse than losing a license that says you're deaf. You lose your credit card and it gets maxed out within a day.

I do have that written on my driver's license and I think that is fair cos police would know that you are deaf. On the back of my license, it say Conditions:- Wear suitable hearing aid and Wear suitable visual aids when driving. No-one else can write that on the driver's license except the police dept.

Speaking about parking in the disabled bays, I often joke to my hubby that I should park there cos my ears are disabled. lol...I never parks there cos I can walk and it only for peope who couldnt walk too far (mostly eldery people) and people in wheelchair. They must have a card to display on their dashboard to park in the disabled bays. They can get a card from the disability govt dept with a letter from thier doctor as a proof. Sometimes, I have seen people who can walk parking there and have a card. I think they borrow their grandparents or their disabled friend which I think is wrong having the real disabled person to park further away. *smh*

Please don't assume that. Many people have invisible disabilities and just because they're not in a wheelchair or on crutches, or they're not old, doesn't mean they don't need to use disabled parking.

I'm one of them.

Koala ... apparently, from what I've heard that they're phasing it out by not printing any special conditions on the licences down here in Oz. Don't ask me why. :dunno:

Here in the states our licenses have restrictions on the back, but mine doesnt say anything about being HoH or deaf. I may ask about that when I renew my license in November.

we have a thing for restrictions or watever marked 'X' for people who wear glasses.
I may ask too about deaf/hoh thing.
