So two of my (hearing) friends i hung out with today asked me the same thing to me (at diff times). My friend Jodi asked me this morning why I didn't have a handicap sign for parking. I was like well, I'm not physically disabled, so hard of hearing or deaf people do not get signs for special front of the store parking. In the afternoon my friend Maureen asked me the exact same thing. I've never had anyone ask me this before...it was quite strange.

Has any hearie ever ask any of you this? lol

That's a new one on me, too! I've never heard that question being asked before. **shaking head in amazement**

At least in this state, and probably in some (maybe all?) others, you can register for a permit of sorts that while not granting you the right to things like disabled parking, will make you more easily identifiable as deaf/hoh to emergency services.

I completely urge any deaf person who hasn't pursued an option like that where they live to do so- it's a good safety measure.

Yes, I have been asked to have a handicap sign for parking in the windshield of my car. I told my family members and friends that I don't need the handicap sign for parking because I am not disable. I can walk and move around, except my deafness. They insisted that I should have the handicap sign for parking. I simply said "No". I just let it go and they never brought it up again, but once in a small while they pop up with the question again. :giggle:

I never had that one. This would had been great in Dixie's thread.(can't remember the thread, I got to go find it ):giggle:

I haven't received those kind of questions, but one time my friend (he is hearing) got cast on his arm (fell hard from snowboarding), anyways one time we went to movie, and we couldn't find the parking lot. I decided to tell him that we should park on the handicap, because of your arm. He definitely did not like what I said. Hearing people do get turned off, same with deaf people about handicap parking. Perhaps your friends have weird thoughts.

Does anyone get a special symbol or anything on their license to say hoh or deaf like that symbol with the ear and the slash through it? I think that is a good idea to have on your license card.

Nope, I don't need to show everyone my identity. I can do anything except hear, what's so big deal?

I've never had anyone ask me this, but I have seen some deaf people with it because they think they have to have one since they are deaf and deafness is a handicap. I keep reminding them that they are not physically disabled and that if they are able to walk, then they have no need for a handicapped parking pass.

I have one friend who has one because her parents insisted she have one for when she was in college. However, she never really uses it unless the parking lot is really full and all the handicapped parking spaces are empty.

The most common excuse I hear from deaf people regarding handicapped parking passes
is that since they can't hear, they need to make their trip short from the car to the store. My response is that they simply need to be as alert in the parking lot as they are in other places. Just make sure you walk aside the parked cars and not in the middle of the driving path. If a car is going to back out, you will see the lights appear on the car. You look both ways before crossing the street.

If you really have to have a handicapped parking pass, then you might as well get a hearing dog if you're so dependent on getting every accommodation possible.

I have a "I am a deaf driver" mini-banner in my truck just in case the cops pull me over and point guns at me.

I cant remember if I have been asked that question but I do remember discussing it in another thread.

I dont feel a need to park in the handicapped spots. Besides, I purposefully park as far away from the building to get more walking mileage since it is a good way to get more exercise.

I've heard that those stickers won't really do much since anyone could get those stickers.

A hearing guy could use that sticker and surprise the police when they think the driver is deaf.

Someone else could see that sticker and know that he can sneak up on you for a carjacking without you hearing it.

I dont put it on my car. It is in my window visor cuz I dont want the other drivers to know that I am deaf and take advantage of it. I just have it nearby when the situation calls for it.

I've had some deaf tell me that they should have parking spaces reserved for them. Personally, I don't think any deaf should use the handicapped parking space unless they have trouble walking or are wheel chair bound.

Even if it was legal, I wouldn't think it is right for a deaf person to apply for a handicap sign.

I agree, i couldn't believe my friends had said that either. Quite weird. I wouldn't think any deaf person should have a handicap spot unless they maybe have been attacked b4 because of walking alone and not hearing someone come up behind them.
That's the one of the biggest things I don't like about my hearing loss is that i can't which way a car is coming from..i can sometimes hear the car..and then hey it pops out..but sometimes i can't hear a car behind me.
I've almost been run over before..but that's because the guy was actually being an a-hole and pretty much and was wayyy to close to me while i was putting a shopping cart away in those lil cart shed/shelter things they have in the parking lot. I turned around and his front bumper was right behind me and i was like at the door of the shed thing and he was like creeping up behind me and giving me the meanest look like i was in the wrong!

but back to the subject. I think that in the police system they should get a heads up when they do license check that driver of car is hoh/deaf. I just think it is better that way so they don't think your being rude for not answering right away or ignorant/rude by asking them to repeat themselves...

Instead of walking with the traffic, you should walk against it so you can see cars coming towards you. :)

As for the police... Perhaps when more people become deaf, and it becomes an issue, we will see changes. But, hopefully they won't introduce something visual (such as a sticker) that easily identifies deaf drivers.

Seems to me, the only people who would ask if deafies get handicap parking permits are those who blurt out any errant thoughts crossing their tiny minds. (And when you call 'em on it, they say, "Well, I was just being honest." Bah!)

Ha ha ha, and you got two in one day, Lilitalia. Bad luck! A lady I know says stupid things like that all the time. You can always tell when something brainless is coming, because she says, "No offense," then proceeds to offend.

I think the idea is that if you get pulled over or there is a license check then the police officer will know you are deaf, so they don't think you are being rude or uncooperative by asking them to repeat things or not responding.
