Hi guys.

As some of you may know for other posts I've made. My activation day way 3 days ago. Now that it's been a few days I figured I'd share with you all.

Of course nothing sounds right yet. I went in for my second mapping the day after activation. For those of you who don't have a CI I'll share what steps have been taken so far.

On the first activation day it was set to 5% volume. They put 4 programs on it and each program was a little louder then the one before. So my job the first day was to keep it on the lowest program for a while (1). Then a few hours later jump to the next one and so forth (As long as it doesn't become uncomfortable).

The second day mapping was basically the same process except it was turned up to 10%. So between now and my next mapping on Jan. 7 I'm suppose to jump up to a higher program ever couple of days.

But a really cool thing happened on the second day. My audi gave me some of the beep tests then she covered her mouth and I was to tell her if I hear her speak. I could hear her speak just fine (Can't understand what she says yet but I can hear the voice). Now here's the cool part. She covered her mouth again and instructed me to tell her if I can tell if the words she says are one or two syllables. I got them all right then I surprised her when I said, "2.. Did you just say airplane?" So it was cool that I was actually able to not only know when she spoke but I also picked up a couple of words. This wasn't expected to be possible on my second day so it was very cool.

So next she asked if I can repeat numbers from one to 9 as her mouth was covered. I got 7, 2 and 9 right.

Then she said she wanted to check something and took me into the sound proof room where the real tests are done. We didn't run a long test. I just had to raise my hands when I heard some beeps and a few speech words (I didn't have to repeat what she said but just tell her when I heard it). She did this breif test just to explain why what it meant that I was able to pick up a few words already and compare it to my last hearing test which I got zero in speech.

Here's a graph of my last hearing test about 5 months ago and the one I just did yesterday the day after activation. The old results are in black (Unaided) and the new one is in red (With CI).

This is with STD = 0. Volume 10%

As you can see it's well in the range of speech and this was not expected till later. So we're very happy with the results so far.

Now for the Nucleus 5. I know there are some posts here asking questions about it. IF any of you have any question or anything you want me to check out let me know.

I can't compare it to any of the other CI's out there because this is my first. But I will say that the small size is great and it's easy to forget there's anything behind my ear.

It's to early for me to make comments on sound quality or anything like that because it's only been a few days and nothing sounds right yet. But I'm very happy with it. I'll come back after about a week or so and share any more thoughts and discoveries. But right now I'm discovering new sounds all the time. It's awesome!

That great news, I very happy for you. look forward to see how you doing in a week or two!

I am glad you are so happy and it worked so well for you. :)

PS You forgot to tell us what you got your mom for Christmas?

Glad to hear that activation is going well. It's very exciting! Have a great holiday!

That is crazy! You already hear at 20db with CI a few days after activation! Thanks for sharing your audiogram. We can learn from it. Most people I read about, they hear at 40 to 50db with CI which slowly improves and stops at a 30db average. Some, like you are doing way better than average! You can already hear alot of sounds and even a little speech. Considering you havent worn HAs for over 10 years and are doing this well, you are an amazing CI success!

Congratulation!! Hey listen please don't let DD steal your audiograms and put on his blog website. You better be careful.

I am happy for you to hear with new N5. Is your mom with you? Keep it up wear CI and don't give it up. Good luck and enjoy with hear the sound environment.

From what I have seen, this is normal. You choose to think that every single person is a star rather than see what average REALLY is.

Thank you everyone.

I am glad you are so happy and it worked so well for you. :)

Actually, I thought she was getting her HA last week but I found out that she got the mold for the HA last week. She won't actually get hers until Jan. 6. She also has a birthday next month so I decided to wait and see what comes with her HA then find a gift for her birthday for it that didn't come with her HA. Thanks for asking.

Wow, what a wonderful experience Ron! I too think your audiogram was as expected for a CI (though not everybody gets to do a booth test right out of the gate), but your ability to actually make sense of sounds so quickly is just amazing!! And even word recognition?!

I'm so happy for you that this is turning out to be an enjoyable experience and wish you so many more amazing discoveries!

Ron, I have a feeling that the best present you can give your mom is your time and attention. Moms are like that. Enjoy!

Congrats and glad all is going well.

That's awesome ron! You are post-lingual right?

Yes. I've always been HOH but when I was growing up I got by just fine with hearing aids. My hearing decreased to deafness during my late teens and early 20's (I'm almost 39 now). The last time I heard a voice (When it was loud) was about 17 years ago.

Thanks again.

that is awesome! u prolly are having an easy time cuz ur brain still remembers sound..but great that its soooo quickly thats great! hope to hear more from you bout your CI

My average dB with my CI is 20 so it's pretty the norm from what I read with other CI users.

I didn't understand a thing on activation day - in fact, couldn't even tell the difference between high and low pitches or soft to loud tones. It was worrisome at first because I was getting nothing but I did "sense" something in my brain. I couldn't explain what those weird sensations were.

It took a few months to finally start recognizing speech and my lipreading/speech comprehension improved so much. I could even understand some speech without lipreading.

Sadly, my CI processor is broken and they don't make it anymore and they're waiting for FDA approval e the processor for my implant. I cannot wait to get a new processor as it would make my social interaction with the hearing much easier.
