Motorcycle insurance rates?

Most riders in the South (East, West, and Gulf Coast) are year-round riders. They get more bang for the buck with their bikes.

Yeah, but it appears that for those who cannot ride parts of the year due to the weather, their premiums are suspended or whatever the term is......

If they truly don't ride their bikes at all during that time, I can see maybe removing the collision part but I guess they would still need to maintain coverage for theft and damage. It would be sad to have a few days break in the weather and not be able to ride just because the insurance lapsed.

I wonder if the insurance is actually stopped, or are the winter months simply taken into account when determining the premiums and adjusted for that? :dunno:

We'll have to hear from those in the snow belt. :)

How does your policy read?

Are you actually covered all 12 months but your premiums are calculated with the winter month "break" taken into account?

I don't think there is "premium" in motorcycle coverage like car. It's just a simple "full comprehensive" coverage. Mine's $240 a year and I guess $120 for 6 months.

The discount I see is:

Claim Free Renewal - If you don't file an at fault claim during your policy period, you automatically receive a discount at renewal.
Prompt Payment - If you've been with us for a year and pay your installments on time, you'll receive a discount on your renewal.
Multi Policy - If you have more than one policy with us you may qualify for a discount. For assistance, please contact Customer Service at 1-877-280-8418.
Responsible Driver - If you've had no accidents or violations in the last three years, you will receive a discount.
LoJack® - If your motorcycle has LoJack®, you receive a discount.
Multi Vehicle 2 - If you insure more than one bike with us, you receive a discount.

my coverage is...
BODILY INJURY & PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY $46.00
BI $25,000 EACH PERSON - $50,000 EACH ACCIDENT
PD LIABILITY $10,000 EACH ACCIDENT
UNINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST BODILY INJURY $23.00
$25,000 EACH PERSON/$50,000 EACH ACCIDENT
UNINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST PROPERTY DAMAGE $4.00
$10,000 EACH ACCIDENT LESS $500 DEDUCTIBLE
COMPREHENSIVE $250 DEDUCTIBLE $28.00
COLLISION $500 DEDUCTIBLE $113.00
ACCESSORY COVERAGE $3,000 INCL
ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WITH TRIP INTERRUPTION $15.00
$500 EACH OCCURRENCE
Premium by Vehicle $229.00
Policy Level Coverage
Pedestrian Personal Injury Protection $12.00
Medical Expense
$250,000 Each Person/Each Accident
$250 Deductible/20% Co-P
Nj Prop-Liab Ins Guaranty Assoc Surcharge $2.00

Total Policy Premium $243.00

for theft and damage... I guess it's a risk they're willing to take just to shave off some bucks during off-season especially for secondary vehicle but I think they would keep a year-around coverage for a more expensive bike like $20,000 touring/cruiser motorcycle. I believe people w/ expensive bikes most likely would include it together with car + house.

I don't think there's "winter break" thing to take into account. Later on after I signed up for insurance, I called Progressive to adjust my policy from "recreational" to "commuting" but the agent told me to not worry about it and that it doesn't affect anything. I recall selecting "Recreational Use" when signing up for it and I thought it would make my insurance policy cheaper but I suppose it's just for statistic purpose. :dunno:

I guess - as long as your driving history is safe and clean... you will continue to get a discount as the time goes by.

So you are covered all 12 months of the year? Meaning, even bikers who don't ride 12 months of the years still get insurance for the whole 12 months. Is that correct?

Back-door connection....in California, and with the DMV, if you foresee a period on non-use of any registered vehicle, the registration fee is waived and they just charge a five-dollar administrative fee.

Interesting.

In SC, if you don't have insurance coverage on your vehicle, the license plate is revoked. That is, you can't keep a tag on a vehicle that is uninsured.

No proof of insurance = no tag (plate).

In my case, which I've done just the one time...I just paid the DMV the five-dollar fee but of course, kept up with the insurance premiums. In fact, I let the insurance lapse once, too, and started it up again with the same company, Foremost.

Each state is sooooo different; confusing.

oh gotcha. Such insurance term confused me sometimes. :dunno:

yep. same here. Since I didn't want to repair my Saab... I decided to remove it from insurance coverage. The agent told that I had to surrender my license plate first.

I paid $103 a year under Progressive Insurance. It's just a liability coverage because my motorcycle is 8 years old. I don't ride everyday. If I planned to ride everyday, I would increase coverage to $228 a year for full coverage.

yep. you definitely should go full coverage when you renew your insurance coverage because of no-fault accident and uninsured driver. At least it's a good peace of mind to know that you will be completely covered... especially medical expense. Due to bad economy... many drivers have limited coverage or no insurance so they will not be able to pay you and you have no way of collecting full amount. A very costly and time-consuming way is to hire a lawyer to sue them but good luck collecting the money.

With full coverage - your insurance company will pay the rest of amount owed to you by them and then forget about it. (ie. NJ's law requires minimum Bodily Injury Liability coverage to be $15,000 per person/$30,000 per accident so if the driver's limited liability covers up to $15,000 and your medical expense is $40,000. your insurance will pay you $25,000.)

better $228 than $$$$$$$$ legal/medical expenses :ugh:

I agree with you. I know I'm just taking risk tho. Right now, It's winter coming soon and I am not able to ride anywhere till spring or weather warmed up whichever comes first. Secondly, My work reporting time just moved back 30 min. It enable me to ride motorcycle without worry about dropping off kids at 7:15- 7:30 am. Usually, If I drop kids off, I may not have enough time to be able to ride to work in different way. I was trying to avoid traffic jams at I-435. It seem "timed" when it's 7:35am or after, it jammed up. And also If I got transfer to another job location closer to my home, I would be able to ride daily and wanted to increase coverage.

I'm not alone on having $100 liability coverage, My friend who own chopper also have $100 liability coverage too. He's tight in his budget and he knew the risk but didn't care.
