Money Saving Tips?

You could see if you can get a low income rate on your electric bills, if you get any kind of public assistance you my be qualifies to pay less $$. If you eat out a lot cut back on this , and try not to buy junk food if you do. If something is on sale check out the prices to see if you'll really be saving money . Some stores will have a sales for 2 boxes of food etc for $6.00 or whatever and people will buy one box thinking it will cost $3 00 . They could end paying the full price for the one box . This happen to me at Petco they had sign up saying sale 2 boxes of dog cookies for $6.00 so I brought one and cost $ 4. and some cents . The sign did not say one box will cost the full price . I got the box for $3.00 . This may sound like small change but it can add up if you get over charge a lot , so always check your sales sale receipts before leaving a store. I do and I had gotten back money a lot of times .

I COULD see if I qualify for lower income for cable. Hmm. Never thought of that. As for eating out, I don't do too much of that, thankfully, so I'm okay. I do usually look for stuff on sale, but my local store recently closed, and I've been forced to go to another one for the time being, and they don't have sales, if ever.

Pack lunch/snacks/drinks for work. That saves me a bunch. If you drive, cut down on unnecessary trips and try to go to places in the same area. Replace old bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Weatherproof windows and doors. If electric goes up and down throughout the year, many companies will look at your year and let you make average payments. Check for a day old bread shop; we had these in VA and basically they sell bread goods that are near the sell by date at big discount. You can also check some 24 hour convenience stores, they often throw out stuff on third shift and if you're on good terms, you can get them first. Did this a lot in college at 7-11. Barter for stuff - trade things you have for what you want, even services (like fixing a bike or watching their dog). Keep an eye on craigslist for free items that you want or could trade. People often give away junk you can sell to salvage yard.

I talking about your electric bills , you can't get a discount on your cable . You can down grade your cable to save money.

Weatherproofing my window? Done (sort of, anyways). I put something up to keep the cold out, and for the most part, it's worked well, and my 2nd floor bedroom is in fine shape, albeit a little cool, but that's okay-- better than stuffy hot.

Oh, that. I'm not sure if the owner of the house does that already. As for cable, well, I guess I'm stuck with that.

Do you have a local library? They can save you lots of money. Borrow DVDs and watch movies. If they don't have the movie you want, ask if they can request it. Maybe kill your cable bill that way and it's free.

Also, books. Check out http://www.alldeaf.com/movies-books-tv-media/82446-what-you-reading-right-now.html - maybe some ADers that you feel mentally in sync with are reading things you could check out, see if you like. Same for home visits, if someone in your family has a card they can add your name to. Just go and get lots of books, bring them home and dive into them. No need to get bored and spend so much money entertaining yourself with technology.

Hmm. Eliminating cable IS on the table, but if I do that, then I would need to find other ways to watch what I want, and Netflix I could do, for just $8 a month, which isn't that bad, considering that my cable bill is over $90 a month, and if it reaches the $100's, that's the end of the line.

As for why my phone is so expensive, that's really easy. If I'm bored on my home visits, and don't have anything to do, I can just activate my phone's hotspot and call friends and do stuff, therefore keeping me busy. That's why I have it like that, because I need to have a hotspot for home visits, but yes, I DO need a cheaper data plan, but the problem is, the phone I want to get has more GB, but the same plan as my current phone.

Cable is a must-have.... I know it's pricey, but I can afford it. Like I said, I get over $700 in government income, which allows me to pay for necessary things so I don't get bored to death. If you have another idea for cable, I'm all ears. You must understand though-- my house already has Internet by Comcast, which itself isn't paid for by me, but by the owner of this house, and that's likely why my cable bill is so high. I previously was paying just $50.65 a month for the same service, but the person whose name my cable box was under moved away, and he transferred the service to me, and now I'm responsible for it.

There is a local library less than 2 blocks from my home. I haven't been inside for a few years, with the exception to vote in 2008, but otherwise I haven't had much need for it.

That's right..... forgot about the 1/4 equals 25%. My bad. I was well off my mark with that, in terms of percentages, anyways.

You can remember that by thinking of how 1/4 is sometimes read "one fourth" but also sometimes read "one quarter" (envision a circle, like a pizza, cut into four pieces). Then think of the coin (quarter), so 25 cents, which is 25 percent of a dollar:)

After I saw you say I'll be saving $300 a year I expected "By switching to Geico" Follow that... :laugh2:

However, haircuts do add up in money. People don't realize the little things that add up. :P

I've done math if I will be saving money by switching to Geico... nope! I'm saving absolutely nothing. what a fraud.

Getting rid of cable HAS been on my mind for a while now, but the hotspot I can't get rid of. Why? It prevents my phone's battery from running out too quickly than it would if I only used 3G. That's why I must have it.

As for cooking at home, yes I do a lot of that, and I rarely eat out much these days. It's just common sense.

I am not sure which carrier you have, but with sprint they can give you a free airrave if your signal is not strong enough and all you have to do is pay taxes for second phone number on air rave. verizon has simalar.

Its easy to suggest things to save money behind a keyboard, but its important to know your lifestyle and try to tweak it to make your life more acceptable. As for TV cable, All i would do is get internet connection. compare cable vs dsl/fios prices. you can watch shows via internet - just not live for most part. you can watch local news live via air for free.

How do you shop for food? do you compare prices from various stores? try to balance gas cost to get there? Do you stock up on food that is on sale? DO you try to adjust your food habits so you are eating better food that has protein in it to feel full so you can eat less? eggs/beans/meat/etc. is aldis in your shopping ?

Do you use gas buddy app on your phone to make sure you get the lowest cost of gas from where ever you are?

Do you use the free checking/saving option?

Do you combine shopping trips and go with a friend and take turns to save gas?

I'd give up tv cable and go with library. get books and movies there. its enough to keep you busy in winter months.

Personally, I hate using cash- I prefer card as it keeps all my change in one place and it doesnt get lost, but you need to learn self control and treat card just like cash and an eggshell that could be broken easily if used.

Do you need things? have you tried local goodwill shops? If you bought only things you need from good will you would save money. The only thing I would not buy is t shirts since sometimes its cheaper at walmart for 5 bucks. It pays to know the prices on things you need from various stores.

have you looked at your total income and see if you qualify for help from your dss?

I have Cricket, which has the best coverage here in my area and when I go on home visits. I cannot afford neither Sprint nor Verizon, because both cost too much.

As for gas, I can't drive, so I don't have to worry about that.

For food shopping, yes, I do keep an eye out for local sales, but there are some products that big food chain stores don't have, and I'd need to buy local. I do eat meat, but mainly white meat, and occasional eggs.

As for Internet, I already have that, and if I wanted to watch a TV show, I could just go to YouTube for that-- free and easy.

TCS quit shaving last November; he has a full (almost white) beard now. I guess he saves some on blades.

(No, he's not going for the Duck Dynasty look. )

True. I spend about ½ of what Jiro does on haircuts each year. I get a haircut about every other month.
