Hi there! I'm Shonda a single mom to the CUTEST little boy (I'll argue w/anyone who disagrees LOL) My son was born deaf ~ he failed his newborn hearing test on the left side three times but Doctors wanted say it was fluid on his ears, would dry up-- he'd hear fine, etc... well at 6 wks old he had an ABR done and yeah, he was not only profoundly deaf on the left side but moderately deaf on the right as well... {let me add here, I'm in the process of adopting him-- his mother had a virus when she was pregnant with him that caused his hearing loss and other problems-- so was not prepared at all for the hearing impairment since it's not inherited}

Even w/all his issues he's not slowing down... he's a VERY active 11 mo old boy who is all about being rough and tumble... he loves to wrestle and play!!

He's been wearing hearing aids since he was 3.5 months old- so they've been a part of him since he was tiny... and for the most part he leaves them in... :laugh2: sometimes he prefers to eat them, but 'eh he's still little, right??

I'm learning a lot about the 'deaf culture' so I can help him to decide if he wants to be oral or sign... I'm trying to learn ASl myself (I know some but not enough to have an intelligent converstation-- unless I'm telling you to STOP, sit down and put your socks and shoes on more!! LOL I learned that teaching preschool years ago!! )

I'm open to any suggestions you might have to help me w/raising a toddler w/a hearing impairment... ESPECIALLY about dicipline... (that's a whole new thread!)

THANKS for the warm welcome I've already received in some threads!!!

awww.

:welcome: to All Deaf.

I am sure he is a handful as most toddlers are!!

I will not argue with you about him being a cutie! :) Love the blue Hearing aids and the mold.

One thing I will add to say. I really hope you choose to use ASL as a mode of communicating with him. You can teach him to speak as well. But I do feel ASL should be his first choice, due to he will pick up on it much quicker.

I wish he'd pick up on STOP and NO!! LOL

THANKS!! That was the only thing I knew about hearing aids, his Audi picked out the model, etc-- I got to pick out the color!!

LOL sounds like he is a typical toddler. Instead of telling him STOP and NO.

Try redirecting him into something he likes doing. May only keep his attention for about a second. but hey!! :D

I work in a pre school setting. I used to work with toddlers. 6 of them at a time. So the redirecting usually works very well.

I'm trying that... works most of the time, just hard when I need him to stop getting up while I'm trying to change his diaper or get him ready for school stuff like that-- toys don't distract him then

stuff like pulling my hair or yanking my glasses off-- redirecting him works wonders... especially if he realizes he wont get 'mommy time' if he's hurting mommy-- a couple of minutes in the play yard and he stops the hair pulling~ long enough to get some love!! (he yanks it out of a ponytail even!) Rotten monkey! :monkey:

Heya again!

I know I've said it in another thread but I'll say it again - Welcome to AllDeaf.

It's nice to see another Kentuckian on the forum. You were asking me where in Kentucky I am at? (In another thread) I'm in Danville and that is where the city is the home to Kentucky School for the Deaf. I see you said you're in Lexington.

I'm not sure if you know this - They have a 'silent' social gathering on every 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month at Fayette Mall Food Court. It usually starts from 6pm to 9pm. I go there once in a while though. :)

Oh, and also - KSD (Kentucky School for the Deaf) does offer ASL Courses for Adults at a small fee. It usually begins sometime in the spring and in the fall as well. I will have to find out more information about it and to find out when does it exactly begins.

It sounds like your toddler is definitely going to be a happy toddler. You had to pick the BLUE hearing aid and the ear molds just because it's for the University of Kentucky Wildcats? :giggle: If so, Go Cats!!! :D

Welcome to AllDeaf! :D

 Shonda and Adam~

:welcome: to AD!!

By the way- your son is adorable wearing the hearing aids. :) Love kids myself. Love seeing the kids using sign language with their tiny fingers. So cute!! :) Hope to hear some more about it.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome we've received here at AD. I am learning so much here!!! Thanks again!!! :ty:

Hi again!! :) I was supposed to attend a seminar at KSD in January but the tiny man got sick and was in the hospital then :( so I missed it!! His PT's dad is over the Spec Ed program down there and I've heard great things about it! She's trying right now to help me find a ASL class close by that works w/my schedule so I can start learning more and actually take a class and not just do ASL Pro.com so I know I'm doing it right (I'm so leery of making HUGE mistakes and teaching Adam words he doesn't need to use! LOL )

I saw you mention in another thread about the mall-- I hate going to Fayette mall but it might be worth it to learn some things-- are they pretty tolerant of active toddlers?? He would of course be w/me! LOL

THANK YOU so much for the welcome!!! And I'm glad someone else from the area is on here!!!

Ok... no, his aids are blue b/c he wears a lot of blue-- I am a Tennessee girl at heart so even though I work for UK-- he is not sporting blue to yell GO CATS LMAO... just b/c they work w/most of his little outfits---I mean it's shallow but I figured if he's gotta wear them... why not match??
