Hi there! I'm Shonda a single mom to the CUTEST little boy (I'll argue w/anyone who disagrees LOL) My son was born deaf ~ he failed his newborn hearing test on the left side three times but Doctors wanted say it was fluid on his ears, would dry up-- he'd hear fine, etc... well at 6 wks old he had an ABR done and yeah, he was not only profoundly deaf on the left side but moderately deaf on the right as well... {let me add here, I'm in the process of adopting him-- his mother had a virus when she was pregnant with him that caused his hearing loss and other problems-- so was not prepared at all for the hearing impairment since it's not inherited}
Even w/all his issues he's not slowing down... he's a VERY active 11 mo old boy who is all about being rough and tumble... he loves to wrestle and play!!
He's been wearing hearing aids since he was 3.5 months old- so they've been a part of him since he was tiny... and for the most part he leaves them in... sometimes he prefers to eat them, but 'eh he's still little, right??
I'm learning a lot about the 'deaf culture' so I can help him to decide if he wants to be oral or sign... I'm trying to learn ASl myself (I know some but not enough to have an intelligent converstation-- unless I'm telling you to STOP, sit down and put your socks and shoes on more!! LOL I learned that teaching preschool years ago!! )
I'm open to any suggestions you might have to help me w/raising a toddler w/a hearing impairment... ESPECIALLY about dicipline... (that's a whole new thread!)
THANKS for the warm welcome I've already received in some threads!!!
