Mom charged after 35-pound son begs for food
10-year-old went to neighbor, who called police; mother blames father

Updated: 1:36 p.m. ET June 11, 2007

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A 10-year-old boy who weighed just 35 pounds when he knocked on a neighbor's door pleading for food was being treated Monday for malnutrition, while his mother was held on child neglect charges, police said.

The Port St. Lucie boy, whose name was not released, knocked a neighbor's door Saturday night pleading for food. The woman gave the boy a peanut butter sandwich and juice, then called authorities.

"He was extremely dirty, filthy, hair was matted. He looked like he was undernourished and extremely thin, and he was begging her for food," Officer Robert Vega said.

The average weight for a 10-year-old boy is about 85 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Kelleen Deon Murray-Auguste, 37, told authorities her son had been living with his father in Haiti until about a month ago, when the father dropped him off in Florida and left.

"She says he was brought to her home in that condition," Vega said.

The woman said she tried to feed him but he couldn't keep any food down. She did not seek medical treatment because she didn't have health insurance, Vega said.

Authorities were looking for the father, whose name was not released.

The woman has nine children ranging in age from 2 to 23 and is pregnant, Vega said. The Florida Department of Children & Families took custody of seven underage children ages 2 to 16, including the 10-year-old boy, he said.

He said none of the children except the 10-year-old showed signs of malnutrition and neglect.

The mother was being held Monday on $150,000 bail, said sheriff's spokesman Mark Weinberg. It was not clear whether a public defender had been assigned. A telephone listing for Murray-Auguste could not be located.

The child was in state care and being treated for malnutrition.

"He's doing better now. They're just trying to provide him the nutrients he's been lacking for so long," Vega said. "Who knows how long it could have been before he got the help he needed. I think he's pretty lucky."

wow that is sad...

See that is why women should work, cause some men are irresponsible.

I would punch the mother and father both for screwing that poor little boy just because of their patheic relationship...

They should have a child when they know they have no money to acheive insurances and foods etc.

geez, that's so awful about this ten years old child who were looking for foods!

Man I'm so glad there's someone who is respect to the law, and who also protect the child, I would never starve my child like that or flithy looks!

If she can't afford for Medical treatment, she shouldn't open her legs, 9 kids plus 1 more on way. She must be coo-coo!

Excuse me for forget to add "not"...

I should type:

"They should NOT have a child when they know they have no money......"

Exactly, it's unfair for child to suffer like this... :(

I think it will be easy if a child development class requirement at any kind of school for depend on age... (maybe frosh to senior) to teach how to take a responality and etc.
for sex ed, its require to teach kids at middle school age to freshmen before having a requirement class of child development. I'm pretty sure it will helpful. :dunno:
sorry, if its sound like topic off but this thread you post it, that makes to remind me of something. I just popped out on my mind of idea. Tought?

As for this thread with link and info... its just too depressing to see like that. :(

I cannot imagine a 10 year old boy with my 3 1/2 year old daughter's weight. :ugh: I hope he bounces back in no time. I wish they would think of asking someone for help to feed the boy instead of neglecting him. Gawd, that's just so sad...

Interesting. My question is, Why was the mother charged in the first place when she very well was trying to feed him? Since that boy was brought to her home in that condition, She might have tried her best to feed him but the child was not able to keep the food down. We don't really know what covers this because the media does not always have the whole story. We can't be too sure of anything until it is confirmed, otherwise.

I see that it was noted she didn't have health insurance and was unable to seek medical treatment. That should have not stopped her from seeking the medical treatment because there are health department/free clinics for those who are below the poverty level. There are different agencies that would step in and help that child to get it's proper nutrition.

He said none of the children except the 10-year-old showed signs of malnutrition and neglect.
None of those children except the 10 year old child had that sign? Something about this tells me differently than what the story is actually telling. It is possible that the child was really neglected but my point is, if that child was really neglected then those 9 other children would have been found to be neglected too, don't you think?

But, Yes, it is sad to see that the child is not able to receive the proper nutrition and to be healthy. In time, I just hope that the child will deserve the proper care as well.

im sure mom would never touch boys for beg of foods and im sure mom can let kids eat or than straves!

mostly kids always eat lots foods and got overweight but parents never knew about kids got overweight but needs to less as lose weight.

im sure kids need staying with his family like Grandparents or relatives when mom in jail!

Yeah, she's what most people would call a "fuck bunny"... a woman who constantly has sex and gets pregnant repeatedly.

Yeah well, if she got a job, she would be too tired to have sex and
too busy to have children.

How cruel. His mother is nut. He could have dead due to obesity. I glad that she was charged.

this is horrible and sad story! I can't dare to do my own kids like that. I must make sure them keep their health and good nurtions.. my childern are for my admire, cherish and selfish.. :)

Anyway, Little child's mother who blamed his father, She shouldn't looking for a blame nor an excuse. its her responsbile. Why not she take him up to hospital and check it up what wrong with her child after his father drop him off at mother's place, huh?

She didn't want to take her responsbile for actions! Then she blame herself, not the little child's father nor the little child.. Ummm..

Joile77, Your post is EXCELLENT POINT! Yes! I had the same thought as you said of quote above. the story is very controversy itself.

Let florida take care of the case and good luck to mother. :)

That sounds terrible! :pissed:

Somehow the mothers story doesn't hold too much water because if she was feeding him since he came back from his dad's why was he begging?

I agree, that woman has way too many children.
