SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A group of protesters from the group Black Lives Matter caused the shutdown of one side of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in a police-brutality protest tied to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Members of the group stopped vehicles in all the westbound lanes at about 4 p.m. Monday. They chained themselves and the cars together to form a line across the bridge and laid signs reading "BLACK HEALTH MATTERS" across the roadway.

Traffic was blocked for travelers heading into San Francisco from the East Bay as the holiday weekend was ending.

About 30 minutes later, California Highway Patrol officers were pulling protesters from cars and pulling their cars to the side of the road. Traffic soon began slowly moving again.

The group had been peacefully protesting police brutality in the area for much of the day.

How is it peaceful when it disrupts society... There are better ways...

Isn't BLM for jobs? They don't want law enforcement positions or anything requiring a college degree.....Nothing wrong to work at stores but they will looted it later...

I saw this on the news today and all I can say is I hope to HELL this didn't stop emergency responders from doing their job in saving all people lives .

I can't think about someone from SF wants emergency transport to hospital in Oakland or someone from Oakland and transport to hospital in SF.

The traffic on bridge is all-time congested so medical communities prefer air
ambulance by helicopter to bypass the traffic on bridge.

Sometime emergency responders from other cites or towns are needed to help put out a fire etc.

SF and Oakland are big cities between the bridge and they have own big fire departments.

The bridge is very congested so they have own emergencies to take care of situation.

I'm sure that emergency vehicles still cross the bridge congestion or not people are supposed to pull over if they can to let them pass.

Might ask my friend who lives in SF if he knows.

It's not just emergency... people could be late for work, appointments, and other things. There is better ways to protest but blocking traffic is not smart.

Very inconsiderate. If I was stuck in that traffic I would be in bad shape, especially if there were no potties available on the bridge.

I have same issue with traffic in DC, it is difficult to find bathroom without paying for something and the traffic is getting congested easily in DC metro.

I avoid that by check traffic map, use shortcut and find way with restroom break.

The big bridge to big cities are easily congested so be prepared.

Not just protest only, also, major traffic collision cause congestion, even people made mistake like use text while driving, DUI and not pay attention that result in collision.
