Military-Like Kids Groups?

As a child I never belonged to any paramilitary groups. When I was 19 years old, I joined the real Navy. :)

After we left the scouts, my brother joing the Civil Air Patrol, and they wouldn't take me because I was deaf. That was a while ago and I have no idea if they accept the deaf nowadays. It sounded like a lot of fun when they searched for "bombs" which were water heaters, went camping, swimming, etc. He made me shine his boots for him, grrrr, lol.

I was in Girl Guide similar to Girl Scouts.

I was in none of these. However my brother was in Boy Scouts all the way from Tiger Cubs up to Eagle scout. (think about doing the scouting thing from aged 4 until 18 or 19, by then your sick of it.)

I wanted to go on the camping trips and do all the fun things my brother got to do. He had something to do OUTSIDE of school.

But me, no. No girl scouts, no clubs, nothing. My life revolved around school and home, and after we got the internet, my only outside activity was the Internet. Its sad when your best friend is your computer, lol.

Then finally someone nice invited me to join a church youth group. From there I blossomed. I finally had something to do outside of school and I felt a bit happier, my parents weren't all for it, but at least I wasn't sitting at home with my face stuck in the computer. lol.

Im hoping to do just the opposite with my kid. I don't want her to grow up miserable like I did. Right now she's in Awanas, when she is old enough (likely next year), she will join the local girl scouts. This way she gets a varied experience. Our local Awanas are a joke. The kids are practically handed the verses and the patches. There's nothing earned about it. :(

I was a former officer cadet in the Navy JROTC and still proud of it.

It was a long time ago and I am trying to remember back when I was a Brownie. I must have been eight or nine years old, I think. Just can not remember how old I was when I became a Brownie. I remember being happy to be in the group and brown uniform is my favorite color and think of chocolate cookies or cocoa to warm myself up feeling good about myself. I have never joined the Girl Scout or any other scouts. This is the first time I read when you mention about the Awanas becoming a scout group. What is a Awanas do? Are Awanas almost similar like Brownies or Girl Scouts? Are Awanas part of the religious groups from the church or what? :puzzled:

They have chapters all over the place. I saw them in the woods at RIT.

I haven't visited the campus for a long time. Surely, it has changed a lot. I hope that there are still a lot of woods and cattails behind a cafeteria.

I can't remember somewhere that we (a small group of ROTC students) went out shooting for the fun games which was part of our class. It was not on the campus.

I loved to look at some military helicopters landing on different areas on the campus. Some ROTC were practicing and marching around the campus in the very early morning. I don't know whether RIT has a website for ROTC students in the pictures because I forgot their names in my skeet & trap class. I sympathized some of them were sent to Iraq and Afghanistan. I know a student in my town, and he was sent to Afghanistan. I was told that he is in a mental hospital because of his memory trauma from the war. He was a brave young man before he joined the army. I heard a rumor that he is too dangerous so he has to be locked at the hospital all the times. I can't believe it.

Web, last time i was RIT student, there are still woods and deers jumping around behind the cafeteria [Grace Watson]. Right now, there are several places that are remodeling around on the campus.

i think i missed RIT, i ought pay a visit there and same time, see old friends n frat.

Brownies, Girl Scouts. Towards the end, I didn't like it anymore except the cookies! ROTC would have been cool but I wasn't going into the military. If I could hear, I would have have liked to be in the Air Force. I love the sky~!

Boy Scouts of America help you a better citizenship with responsible. It's not always outdoor but everything you should know.

I made much as in Life rank badget. The last would be Eagle, it's unfortunately, I wasn't able to made it as I was become 18 and while work.

I never got involved like girl scouts or anything like that, for example except summer camps. (My oldest sister did. My three brothers never got involved, either..) My parents sent me to a summer camp every year until I was 12. I got a real job by then. I used to work at a local Carvel ice cream store until I was 17 as the Manager and then off to college... It was fun, tho.

Cub Scouts and Webelos. Quit the Webelos cuz I got sick of the whole thing.

I have my DD in Awanas, although I have her going, Im not shoving Bible verses down her throat like other parents are doing. She goes more or less for the socialization outside school and home.

However when she is older, I want to broaden her circle a bit to include the Girl Scouts as well as academic and sports clubs that she can join.

I admit I am an Awana Leader (not by choice, I got sucked into it), I don't go pushing verses down the kids throats. Ironically, the kids all cling to me like little magnets when I walk into the room. I wonder why?

I think these days kids have enough adults demanding things from them, they need an adult that they can relax and goof off with and feel like they can be my friend without allowing the line of authority to be blurred.

If anyone wants more info on Awanas based on my experience with the club, let me know.

It is not only about shoving verses in kids throat. I agree the adults needs to loosen up about learning the verses some have to realize it is not easy for all the children to remember and learn. Just as in school. Probably why the children looks up to you Dixie :)

I actually enjoyed it as a child. I was not forced to learn and had fun doing so.

My favorite was the games. the circle with the X and each team was color coded. I was in the AWANAS back in the eighties.
