Middle-aged? Put down the meat

I don't smoke or drink, and am careful about what I eat. I go regularly for my doctor appointments and follow their suggestions. Result: I'm in terrible physical shape right now and they can't tell me why. It's very discouraging.

...

So much "health" information is contradictory; it's frustrating.

TCS doesn't pay any attention to healthy eating and he's in much better shape than me.

I agree that alot of the health information out there is contradictory and frustrating. The contrast you drew between TCS and you, though, I think that cause and effect (you didn't say it, but I've heard people suggest it) can actually go the other way. I think some people are more prone to health problems, and so they pay attention to information out there, they try to adjust their habits in the hope of improving their health. Maybe some things help, others don't and some make things worse. But the person who was never prone to health problems in the first place likely never experiences any motivation to bother with any of that stuff, and they just let their habits follow their preferences.

Until my most recent lab tests I was taking a calcium + D supplement to prevent osteoporosis; now I have too much calcium so I have to quit that. My cholesterol has been going down until I started cutting back even more strictly on cholesterol and fats; now it's gone up. My potassium is too low, so I have to increase that.

One doctor told me to get more sunshine; the other one told me to stay out of the sun.

I do have a good life insurance policy, and a long-term care insurance policy, and a living will.

I spend a lot time out in the sun when is around but it did not help me with
vitamin D so I have to take it. My potassium is a little high from all the yams and bananas I eat . I had a client that got skin cancer and she said she never went out in the sun and her sister did go out in the sun a lot and is fine. I think your genes play a bigger role in how long you'll live. Look at George Burn he always had a cigar in his mouth and he lived to 100 yo.

It's denial. Even I am balancing alcoholic drinks in moderation, but if we're going to make stupid decisions, we have to accept the consequences, not deny the presence of health problems when they arise. My doc once advised me, "By the time you notice something, usually it's already advanced!"

yup.... it's like a car. if you noticed your dashboard is showing ENGINE LIGHT which means your car is low on oil or overheating... it's already too late.

oh that's a common knowledge. as you get older, your meat consumption should be reduced but... everybody should be consuming less meat in their lifetime though because human beings are not designed to gorge themselves in a large quantity of meat in any given year. my previous boss died of heart attack..... he surely did love meat a lot... we scorned him a lot about it but he ignored us.

very sad to see him have an early departure :(

Very good point! I assume we eventually have to find our limitations to certain genetic tolerances to bad and good habits. It's just disapoointing how someone who earned a medical degree can't help Reba?

This is the reason why I'm going to just enjoy life of what I have left rather than restrict myself to so-called rules out there that may or may not work for everyone. No one knows the right answers. There are smokers that don't have lung cancer and then there are non-smokers that get lung cancer. Life is like russian roulette. Enjoy the time we have and make the best of it.

My grandmother smoked since she was a teenager and died at age 103.

If one needs exercise- Mambo dance workshop in 1 1/2 hours from now. Joy of Dance Toronto.

and on the flip side I've seen people who exercise every day only to croak out at less than 60 years old. It makes me wonder if it's kind of pointless living "healthy"

I'm almost 63 and both my parents died in their mid-60's. :(

My husband had a lot of things going wrong with him but he said he'd rather die then give up the foods he enjoyed. And he did. :(
I'd probably be the same way though I do try to limit the "bad" stuff. Unfortunately I don't care for too many "good" things, like veggies & fruit.

Oh Dear! My mom lived to be 93 yo , she out lived her whole family .There where 8 kids in her family and 3 of them dies very young , mom was the only one to live that long . I sure hope you'll live longer than your parents. I am hoping I DO NOT live as long as my mom. My dad was 75 yo give or take a few years. No one had any birth records in his family so dad had to pick out a birth date . When we saw his headstone had the wrong date for his birthday we got upset then thought as far as we knew it could had been the right date and did not get it fixed. I had not eaten red meat in about 43 years now .
