Michelle's Story

oh boy....my surgery day is tomorrow....I am really getting nervous a bit my hubby will be with me and support me too and also my mom too....

All the best for tomorrow! Be a good patient and make good use of the opportunity to be spoiled by both your mum and hubby. You probably won't get another opportunity again :giggle:

Wow, today is the big day!..

Do tell us how the operation went!

my surgery went fine and successful and the surgery last about 3 1/2 hours. Right now I feel lighthead and sometime little bit dizzy and I still have ringing in my ear grrrr I hope it went all away so right now, I am taking easy and resting til I feel alot better.

Congratulations on a successful surgery! I am happy things went well for you. Hang in there; the vertigo and tinnitus should improve. Hope things continue to go well. :h5:

Michelle,

Glad things went well for you! The tinnitus and dizziness should get better as the swelling goes down. When is your Activation?

Welcome and Glad your surgery was successful Michelle!!

a question that anyone can answer, please...

Why is there a surgery date and then a turn on date?

welcome and congrats! i'm still waiting to make an appointment for an evaluation.

Yay! So glad your surgery went well. Yea, it's normal to get tinnitus after the surgery as your ear has effectively suffered trauma. Hope you will feel better with every day.

ASLgal - the CI is turned on a few weeks after the surgery date so as to allow the incision site to heal and the swelling to go down. Wearing the external processor on the scar too soon might feel a tad sore and also sounds may become louder as the swelling goes down. So its best to do the first mapping when the swelling has mostly gone down.

And, practically speaking, who would want/be able to sit through a mapping after that surgery? You need to heal up before turn on/mapping, because it's not just like flipping a switch.

I was mapped I think it was a week after the implant surgery. I didn't have a problem. Swelling wasn't a problem. My center will activate the day following surgery if that is what the patient wants. I think that works better for those who have to travel quite a ways and need to stay for a few days. I do know that people have come here from Montana or Wyoming so turning it on the day following surgery probalby works best for them.

You first get a surgery date to have the internal part of the mplant inserted. Then you have to wait for the incision to heal and the swelling to go down which takes a couple weeks. Once most of the swelling goes down, then you can get an activation date which means they give the external part which looks like a hearing aid with a magnet. The magnet gets attached to your head and the processor gets programmed by the audiologist. At that point they turn it on :)

I'm glad your surgery was a success! How are you feeling now? I hope it gets better as time goes on. Tinnitus is annoying. Did you get one ear or both ears done? My surgery is on the 27th.

I'll be having my surgery on the other ear a few days after you on the 31st! :) Someone should restart that calender that we used to have so we can keep track of everyone!
