13WHAM-TV || Rochester - Meet Dr. Smith, the Pediatrician Who is Deaf
This week is Deaf Awareness Week--dedicated to creating an understanding of deafness and deaf culture.
We had the opportunity to meet a doctor from Rochester who shows you that anything is possible.
Dr. Scott Smith is a behavioral pediatrician at Rochester General Hospital. He’s been deaf since birth.
He works and treats patients using an interpreter.
Scott said, "Growing up, I was always interested in science and helping people... [medicine] combines those two interests."
He's met and conquered many challenges along the way. For instance, instead of phone calls, Dr. Smith goes through a pager system.
He said, "The biggest challenge is convincing people that I am the same as others…I think, personally, the key is confidence...almost anything is possible."
Dr. Smith hopes to teach people to think anything is possible. He knows that happens partly because he is a roll model, so people can see-- if he can do it, they can do it too.
