Mayor to quit over Obama watermelon e-mail

The same way that all offensive stereotypes start...one white person saw one Black person eating watermelon, and decided that all Black people ate watermelon.

After view Jolie's link - those people are an ignorant ... *shake my head sadly*

This prompted me to look more into this and why watermelon became a stereotype center for the blacks?

Reviews: Early Race Films With Watermelons

So, It would make sense as to why it became a stereotype for the blacks.

I like Jolie's explanation better. :ty: for some digging into this puzzling mystery.

:ty: for interesting links. Yes it make sense why the watermelon become a sterotype for blacks in America. After read your links, I interpreted the picture, Major send his friends via email saying "No Easter egg hunt this year." Major´s claim that he didn´t know that the watermelon is an offensive and racist sound skeptical to me because he wrote "No Easter egg hunt this year". Accord Muslim belief, they don´t celebrate Easter. It could be that he also KNEW about watermelon as well because he live in America.

The example picture, I got via email from my co-worker during Election 2008, I deleted the email instead of forward email to my friends because the picture, he send me is racism... It written, if Obama wins at election, paint white house into black house... *shake my head* but I didn´t know about watermelon issues... It´s new to me...

You're welcome. I also did get the same picture of the "Black" White House in a forwarded email a while back ago. I also thought it was idiotic but at the same time, it was portrayed as a joke due to Obama's skin color. Still, It should not make it a right to make it look like it that way otherwise.

You're welcome as well. Yeah, I also was curious to find the connection between the watermelon and the stereotype that centralizes around that stance. While I was growing up, I had heard about the watermelon stereotype but never did really question about it until now. So, that is what made me dig into this. It's kinda interesting how it is played out.

Liebling, you're not the only one not knowing about watermelons. Even I am an American and I had no clue about that and other food related. I just learned today.
