LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - The mayor of a California city says he will resign after being criticized for sharing an e-mail picture depicting the White House lawn planted with watermelons under the title "No Easter egg hunt this year."

Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose issued a statement Thursday saying he is sorry and will step down as mayor at Monday's City Council meeting.

Grose came under fire for sending the picture to what he called "a small group of friends." One of the recipients, a local businesswoman and city volunteer, publicly scolded the mayor for his actions.

Grose says he accepts that the e-mail was in poor taste and has affected his ability to lead the city.

Located in Orange County, Los Alamitos is a 2 1/4-square-mile city of around 12,000 people.

This kind of action is all so sad. Martin Luther King would see that his dream still has far to go. :(

Unfortunately, it would appear that we have taken a giant leap backwards. It is very sad...and frightening, as well.

Apparently this is the image that he forwarded to his friends.

That's another reason I don't even open much less forward emails that have been forwarded umpteen times. It's either something stupid or something fake. Straight to the dumper they go.

Some people have more time on their hands than they have gray matter in their skulls when they forward dopey emails.

Yes, I know it is silly that Major send the picture via emails to his friends but I didn´t know that watermelon was an offensive and racism because watermelon is one of sterotypical foods that blacks like to eat...? Interesting...

Is commericals and TV ads of the black people sit and eat their watermelons an offensive? I thought everyone knows how good and health watermelon is?

I am wondering about this since we have many commercials and TV ads over watermelon here in Germany. Olive skin lady smile with watermelon on her hands on commerical posters to the public and TV.. It affect none.... Oh yes, my co-workers and I went to canteen every Friday for our Fish Day... I often see watermelon there... It doesn´t affect black soldiers and civilians. :dunno2:

Is "Black History month" of the year also offensive to black people as well?

It also doesn´t affect Germans when the commerical and TV ads everywhere what sterotypical foods, Europeans like to eat and drink...

I don´t see anything that watermelon is racism but healthy... :dunno2:

Excuse me for my ignorant... Could anyone interpret me why watermelon is an offensive and racism when you disagree with my view post here?

good question... I know in America - what's offensive & racist to black people shown in a certain context (usually in movie/tv show) is:

1. a bucket of fried chicken
2. eating watermelon
3. grape fruit soda

but it is good question how did that become a racist stereotype for black... :hmm:

This prompted me to look more into this and why watermelon became a stereotype center for the blacks?

I think it has something to do with slavery days when the slaves did not have a lot to eat they would steal watermelons (not because they liked them so much, but they were easier to take) to supplement their meals. They would also take chickens, sweet potatoes, and field peas. They were easier to steal, because the slaves were the ones doing the tending (farming).

So, It would make sense as to why it became a stereotype for the blacks.

The same way that all offensive stereotypes start...one white person saw one Black person eating watermelon, and decided that all Black people ate watermelon.

I laughed, but then again I laughed at the white guy sitting on a toilet on his front porch ordering from summit.

What a bad attempt at humor!

:ty: for interesting links. Yes it make sense why the watermelon become a sterotype for blacks in America. After read your links, I interpreted the picture, Major send his friends via email saying "No Easter egg hunt this year." Major´s claim that he didn´t know that the watermelon is an offensive and racist sound skeptical to me because he wrote "No Easter egg hunt this year". Accord Muslim belief, they don´t celebrate Easter. It could be that he also KNEW about watermelon as well because he live in America.

The example picture, I got via email from my co-worker during Election 2008, I deleted the email instead of forward email to my friends because the picture, he send me is racism... It written, if Obama wins at election, paint white house into black house... *shake my head* but I didn´t know about watermelon issues... It´s new to me...
