UFC 130: Matt Hamill blogs on what it's like to be a deaf fighter - MMAmania.com

In advance of his UFC 130 main event fight against Quinton Jackson on May 28 in Las Vegas, Matt Hamill took to Sportsnet.ca to blog about his life and how he got to this point.

"The Hammer" is unique in that he was born deaf and somehow manages to compete at the highest level as a mixed martial artist in the UFC. How does he do it? He explains:

People assume that it is hard for me to compete as a deaf fighter, but this is all I've ever known. I don't know any other way to fight, and so I've learned to adapt to my environment. Whereas some fighters get weighed down by the advice of their cornermen during a fight, I am in a position where I can receive advice in between rounds and then relax and carry them out for the five-minute rounds. I don't panic or worry if things are going wrong and I don't hear the shouts and screams of my cornermen. It's all on me, and I like it that way.

I remember during Round 1 of the Reese Andy fight (December 2008) I was really struggling to find my groove and things weren't looking great for me. I then got back to the corner and realized Duff Holmes, my coach, was going crazy at me and was really disappointed with the way I was fighting.

Even though I couldn't hear the expletives he was shouting at me, I could pick up his mood and emotions. I then ran out for the next round and stopped Andy. I just needed somebody to pull that inner animal out of me. Once it's out there, nobody can stop me...

Hamill has very quietly amassed a five-fight winning streak, although an asterisk may be necessary due to one of those victories coming over Jon Jones via disqualification. Before the DQ, the Ohioan was getting manhandled.

A win is a win is a win, though, and the records show the amateur wrestling champion hasn't lost a fight since Sept. 2008. His steady rise up the light heavyweight ladder will culminate in two weeks when he throws hands with Jackson.

Can he bring out his inner animal and take out the former 205-pound champion? Or will "Rampage" hit beast-mode and send him back down the divisional standings?

Sound off!

That's my boy!...he's got a lot of heart....reminds me of "Rocky"....he's the underdog against Rampage, tho'.....

He's come a long way ever since I did multiple of interviews with him for my blog about his early MMA days.

I heard he was abusive to his wife?
No, not likely. Of course, you didn't exactly say what the abuse was.
Kokonut Pundits: How is your family and your relationship to them after all of this?

Matt Hamill: I'm at my ex mother in law house. She is supportive of me. My relationship with my ex wife and her family is great. They consider me a part of the family.

Kokonut Pundits: That's great! It's important to maintain a good, healthy relationship.

Matt Hamill: Yeah.
Kokonut Pundit: Interview #3 with Matt Hamill
Matt Hamill: She know what I do for living.

Kokonut Pundits: How old is your daughter?

Matt Hamill: She's 5

Kokonut Pundits: Nice.

Matt Hamill: I'm looking at your blog. My ex wife mention about you.

Kokonut Pundits: How did you ex wife find out about my blog?

Matt Hamill: From her deaf friends.

And your reason for bringing up that rumor is what now?

What is it with your shameless self promotion. We already know that you spend all of your time blogging and attempting to convince the people on the net that you actually make sense and are someone special.

BTW, that wasn't an interview. It was a conversation. You are not a journalist.

He don't have to be journalist. How you know if it wasn't an interview?

It was an interview. I asked him for these interviews ahead of time. He agreed. We set up a date to do the interview and the best way to do it was through chat where it can easily be recorded on the topic of his MMA, UFC and his background.

It was a conversation. Just because you asked questions and he answered at a prearranged time does not make it an interview. It means you arrangecd a time to talk to him, and he agreed. Nothing more. You are not a journalist, you are an amatuer blogger. Not even a journalism student.

Yep, you used the right word there: "chat". Chat is a conversation, informal communication, give and take, not an interview.

Exactly with what Fox news asked me before I was put on tv. Yes you are right, it was an interview.

Yes, an interview. Plus, he provided me those pictures of him sparring in the ring with a trainer as part of his interviews for my blog.

What Fox News did was an interview, Joey, because they are journalists. Kokonut is an amatuer blogger that just speads his opinion all over the internet. A journalist has credibility, and therefore, has a particular formula to their interview strategies. A blogger just asks questions that lead to no conclusion.

Well, I'm not going to lie and say that I haven't heard at least a few rumours that wouldn't reflect him in a positive light. However, I'm not going to repeat them because as far I know, they are unfounded allegations. There may be some truth to them, or they may be completely false. I'm just saying that I have heard things, but I still take them with a grain of salt.

Repeating them would serve no purpose except incite more anger, hatred, accusations and more. For all I know, it could be mere jealousy, envy and more by some common enemies. When people become somewhat famous or popular for a particular reason, it can bring out the ugliness out of some people.

If there is any truth to what has been said about this man, it will be exposed someday. If there is no truth to any of it, then people will just keep making up rumours to please themselves. There's no end to it.

I had a same thought. I've read enough magazines to know what interview should be like.

The line of questioning and the flow of conversation in kokonut's blog seems unprepared and unfocused. It's more of an informal conversation. Could be better but no need to. I don't expect him to adhere to a certain standard since he's just an amateur blogger.

either way - cool that he got to have a convo with Matt. I had a very brief convo with Matt in Vegas because my friend is a very good friend of his and he wanted me to say hi to him for him.

I heard he was abusive to his wife?

Well!....That wouldn't make him an "amazing man" as Jillio said....or "that's my boy" and I said...would it?

That was a low blow and off topic...Matt's personal life isn't on trial here.

Take ur own garbage out to the dumpster. And leave Matt alone.

Better yet, ask Matt yourself! Might find a few or ur teeth missing.

Yes, and you gave out a very good interview. Keep up the good work! :thumb:
