Hi everyone, I would just like to tell everyone a bit about myself. I am currently involved in a project where we will used specialized materials to allow the user to increase alertness to moving objects and sounds. In no way will this allow a person to hear. The applications are fairly obvious which include and are not limited to; knowing when and from what direction someone is trying to get your attention, and also the ability for those who have poor vision to use as a tool to help feel the evironment they are in.

My reason for coming to this site is to get the opinion of the targets for this research in order to understand if I creating something that is not needed or wanted, or if it would be an appreciated technology. Please tell me how you feel and why, it will really help me. Thanks everyone

Sounds awesome.

However - I fail to see a picture of what you're talking about, is it such as like a monitor where you set on the table and it will "see" things around you, is it some stuff you wear, or something else? More information here may trigger more ideas from us.

If it was a monitor that gave me "updates" of what was going on behind me, it would be of some use. Especially if it was in an office setting where you're facing away from most of the action.

This is definitely something I would LOVE to check out and see in development. Where are you located?

That would be a great thing for a deaf/blind. I remember there was a signaler for sirens for the deaf drivers but it was discontinued (I think) for a reason that I can't remember. I'd like to know more about your project.

The general idea would be to create an article of clothing that contains certain materials that would vibrate or change stiffness when nessasary. My job in general is to figure out what material will produce the best reactions from the target user, so there is not a specified article of clothing as you were wondering.

A simple method for allowing a person to realize what was occuring in their surroundings would be to have a clip on ultrasonic sensor that picks up how close objects are. Now realistically speaking only within about a 6 ft radius will the sensor pick up an object. Once the moving object comes within 6ft radius of you, you feel a slight vibration. As the object gets closer the vibration intensifies to give the user the feeling they are about to be touch.

The real function of my research is not simply to produce this device I speak of. It should be understood that an average joe could come up with a similar device in a short time, but in reality the materials needed to produce a light, efficient, comfortable, high performance, long lasting device ,such as the one I desribed, have not yet been recognized.

My location is Drexel University.

Like I said to "posts from hell", I am trying really to basically find a material that can be used for this type of application. Of course, I am planning on creating the device in the end, one of the applications could be an in alert system.

I just remember something... I remember reading about vibrating rings. I just can't remember where I read that. Maybe somebody in here could help me out with this.

very cool idea for those who wants it but not for me. I don't like a physical notifier like a vibration. I don't even like it when my Blackberry vibrates. That's why it's set on 1 or 2 vibrates depending on type of message.

I prefer a secretary :o

I find this interesting that you dont like the use of "vibration". Do you or anyone else happen to have suggestions for methods to notify someone? Thanks

I'm almost the same way. If my bb vibrates i just put it on the table and tell it to stop vibrating before I pick it up again.
I hate IM'ers who IM IM IM IM IM IM ... then my phone goes crazy... Nasty stuff

I like the use of vibration to notify even though it do startles me. Some people are sensitive to the light, could it be showing many different color of letting you know which message is to notify someone. But for me i stick with vibration that i do not response to the light very well.
That would be nice if the vibration has a few different of vibrating to meet people's preference.
