I don't like it anymore than you do, and truly hope these sites will add it voluntarily on their own once they get enough complaint from us.
But at the same time, I really don't want the gov't dictating how a website should be just because they decided to put their site on the internet. Some companies don't even use a website or even post a video.
But sure would love to have transcripts for alot of shows that i see on TV.
Just because we complain doesn't mean that they will take action. Many are just plain lazy or ignorant regarding the deaf community's needs.
False claims of "can't afford it" just doesn't fly. A simple notepad with simple codes implemented with the film is all they need to make it work. Notepads is already provided with Microsoft's OS and same for Linux OS.
Like Marlee said, many just don't have the will to meet the needs of the deaf community and their inaction also violates the American Disability Act (ADA).
We're talking about CBS, ABC and NBC who have deep pockets to make this work. NBC is the same company that canceled her TV show "Reasonable Doubt" (thus the reason why she omitted that in her speech when detailing her credits on movies and TV shows) because they felt that a deaf lawyer was unrealistic and laughable. This goes to show what sort of attitude they have towards the deaf community and their ignorant belief that we are limited.
These Networks don't care about the deaf community, therefore this reason why Marlee went after them. They're still displaying the same exact attitude that they once did 20 years ago regarding implementing CC on their TV shows as they do now with broadband TV shows on the Internet. Marlee also fought to have TVs to have a built in CC chip in their sets when they are manufactured.
Anytime a new technology is created that displays a visual art, the deaf community is never on the minds of the creators. They need to be reminded time and time again.
This time on broadband TV, we're reminding them once again.
We're not asking a total regulation on everything that is the Internet, just those that brings visual arts and sound, but lacks CC to go with it.
