I had my first mammogram today. It was an experience, I had a very kind tech, who was gentle and very nice. There are few things you might not know, when you go for the exam, no deodorant, powder or lotions.

When you are in the x-ray room, near the machine, you are taking front and side images of your breast. When your poor girls are being compressed on the machine, you hold your breath for 5 seconds while they do the x-ray. You will feel the machine rise and its your cue to breath again:)

The reason, I am writing about it, the tech and I were in conversation to make things smooth and not be afraid. I mentioned to her that I was a sign language interpreter. She said, last week , she had a deaf patient, and it was a bit hard to explain when to hold the breath. She said, she explained the instruction before the x-ray. When she mentioned this, I thought about writing here about the experience in case, you are a deaf woman and its your first time taking a mammogram. If you are experienced, glad you got it done!

The tech said, I look good so far , my official results are coming in 10 days :) Be a healthy you!

I been getting them since I was 29 because of too many women on my mothers side of the family have died from breast cancer. For a few years I had to go back for more test ( benigns) and about three years ago I got fed up with the mammo and skip a year ( two years ago) and guess what? last year they found new benigns in my left breast and last month I had them removed ( biopsy) they call it fibroadenoma the good news is I don't have cancer the bad news is they have to watch my left breast every 6 mos for 3 to 4 years so I swore to myself I will never miss another mammo as long as I live. OB7 thanks for this thread this is so important :)

OB7 good luck on your test

Pepsi, good thing you started to get checked after skipping them. I am glad you are ok, its important for us women to do this one. Keep up the check up and eat right :)

Thanks

Thanks OB7 and You're welcome :)

Oceanbreeze, you are right on the spot here. I lost a good friend to breast cancer which arised from a mole she claims was 'nothing to worry about". Then she experienced pain and soreness in the area and finally had it checked and analyzed. It was a malignant growth at an advanced stage. She underwent an extreme treatment of high doses of chemotherapy and radiation - which caused her to be partially blind with complications in her reflexes. Unfortunately, since it was at an advanced stage, this type of cancer was found on other areas of her body - it spread. She passed away in pain and agony, but rest her soul, she no longer has to deal with it any longer. One thing that disappoints me was that her husband no longer cared about her, I and another close friend of hers were her support to the end. So guys, you know what you got into with the vow "til death do us part", she is the same woman, only physically dying, be there for her! Cancer is very tough on all involved, so like OB mentioned, get examined and done right the first time at least at the beginning stages. All growth is suspicious, don't take a chance to dismiss it as being nothing!

Congratulation on your first mammogram.

Been going there for last few years now. And I hate it.

I had that my first time last year....now I am pregnant, and cannot have it till baby is born. I will have it again probably after the holidays.

I hate it but nothing we can do....it is best to check annually to make sure our boobs are safe and healthy.

LakeTahoe and Jazzy glad you got it done to be healthier and safe too :) . Yes, I know its not the best feeling in the world to get squeezed

I had my yearly boob squeeze a couple of month ago. I'm glad that you're reminding others that they need to get them, too. Ladies, ask your doctor what she recommends and get a referral for the test.

Yup, I had mine done for the first time this year after I turned 50 yrs old and am all clear. Lucky you OB7 that you had a gentle tech. Mine wasn't gentle with all the pulling and pushing each of my boobies in to get squeezed. Ouch!

I'm happy for you Koala that you are clear :)

Mine its never gentle it hurts for me to get one but it got to be done.

Men are so lucky they don't have to put up with what us girls have to put up with.

Lol about men except we do not have their balls. It must be embarrased for a male doctor to touch their balls.

I wonder how female doctors feel about pap test?

:laugh2:who knows

I have to go back to the doctor this afternoon, they need to do an ultra sound bec they can't read part of the x-ray, let's hope its all clear and good :)

I just got back, my results were ok, I was told there is benign problem called fibroadenoma, its a knot of fibrous and mammary tissue that feels like a solid lump. Its so small that you can't feel it. I just have to have follow ups if it grows or not. I do have an option to remove it too :) I am okay :)

That's something new, I am considering going to RAD tech school as soon as I find one. Its fascinating to do images in the healthcare profession.

I got inspired after, I had a mammogram to make a difference :)

I think it's a great idea that you're creating this thread, Oceanblue.

We all may have been aware of the mammogram but nevertheless, it still is never too late to spread the words in order to ensure for our health. It is always imperative and for best of our well-being.

I'd need to get myself to take one pretty soon.

Jolie, its always good to take precaution of having our "gals" examined for a healthier you :)

I know its not fun to get squeezed, I am sure you will be fine:)
