Maine middle school to offer birth control

School board approves pills and patches for students ages 11 to 13

PORTLAND, Maine - Pupils at a city middle school will be able to get birth control pills and patches at their student health center after the local school board approved the proposal Wednesday evening.

The plan, offered by city health officials, makes King Middle School the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to students in grades 6 through 8, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

There are no national figures on how many middle schools, where most students range in age from 11 to 13, provide such services.

“It’s very rare that middle schools do this,” said Divya Mohan, a spokeswoman for the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care.

The Portland School Committee voted 7-2 for the measure.

Chairman John Coyne voted against it, saying he felt providing the birth control was a parental responsibility. The other no vote came from Ben Meiklejohn, who said the consent form does not clearly define the services being offered.

Opponents cited religious and health objections.

Diane Miller said she felt the plan was against religion and against God. Another opponent, Peter Doyle, said he felt it violated the rights of parents and puts students at risk of cancer because of hormones in the pill.

A supporter, Richard Verrier, said it’s not enough to depend on parents to protect their children because there may be students who can’t discuss things with their parents.

Parental permission required
Condoms have been available since 2000 to King students who have parental permission to be treated at its student health center.

About one-fourth of student health centers that serve at least one grade of adolescents 11 and older dispense some form of contraception, said Mohan, whose Washington-based organization represents more than 1,700 school-based centers nationwide.

At King Middle School, birth control prescriptions will be given after a student undergoes a physical exam by a physician or nurse practitioner, said Lisa Belanger, who oversees Portland’s student health centers.

Students treated at the centers must first get written parental permission, but under state law such treatment is confidential, and students decide for themselves whether to tell their parents about the services they receive.

Five of the 134 students who visited King’s health center during the 2006-07 school year reported having sexual intercourse, said Amanda Rowe, lead nurse in Portland’s school health centers.

A high school in Topeka, Kan., stopped providing free condoms to students Wednesday after district officials learned of the month-old program. The district has a policy against providing contraceptives.

What do you think of this...

Come and discuss...

Hmm... Is there any negative effect side in the birth control pills? If so, then I would pick condom over the birth control for the health.

Wow.. Obviously, that Maine State is so Boring and make kids have fun sex :dunno2:

I totally disagreed because....school is not a doctor/OB/GYN!!! Best is for girls to check in with OB/GYN when she started her 1st period..and put on BC with parent' approval! I know some don't believe in BC due to her/his beliefs (religious). BC can cause defect your ovaries if taking them too long (more than 5 or 10 years) and harder to get pregnant in the future. I am not sure 100% exact though what BC can caused really bad. Some are really lucky. What if some girls hasn't started period, and put on BC? Not right!

Best is no sex or use tons of condoms!

at age 6 to 8 years old? no way, the school should not be giving out birth control for younger girls as such a young ages. The school should talk with the parents first and the doctors. I would rather wait until my daughter is a teenager or older to come talk to me and talk about birth control issue. The school don't have that right to tell the kids to take birth control without a parents permission. The will get sued for that. What if some of the type of birth control pills harm a young child at 6 to 10 years old? Some side effect can be harmful. I think the school just need to have a sex education classes not giving out birth control pills that can be dangerous to the child. Have that school lost their mind? geez I would give them a hell of a fight with them over that issue.

It's a bad idea for many reasons.

1. Usurps parental control

2. Puts the girls' health at risk

3. Doesn't protect against STD's

4. Assumes that the girls will be responsible enough to take the pills regularly

5. Doesn't protect girls from being intimidated by predatory males who will say, "Hey, you can't get pregnant now, so there's no excuse for us not to have sex together"

6. Doesn't take into consideration the psychological effects of early sexual activity

7. Takes advantage of lower income students (whose parents have signed up for the general free clinic services)

Wow this is absolutely ridiculous, I agreed with what everyone stated in this thread here, and the birth control prescriptions should be given by the parents since it's their responsibility not the school system also I think these children are way too young to have birth control pills..Some of these girls may be allergic to birth control prescriptions...who knows :dunno: and the school system could be facing many lawsuits down the road if something did happened to one of these young students...

I also think that passing out these birth control prescriptions can cause the young students to think that having sex is OK?...:eek3: ..but does the school aware that these birth control pills does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases? or did they forget?...:ugh:

oh no... Not without my permission!

INFACT i don't think school has any right to give these middle school student to have pills or patch... but I would not mind them Discuss on safety etc but Giving them NO NO...

I have spoke with my daughter about having some safe JUST in case in anytime in future if she changed her mind... She hasn't have any serious relationship YET... Which im thankful.. One of her ex-boyfriend did asked me 1 night over AIM that if it was ok for him to call me Mom ? I flipped and told him "no.. I appreciates you asking me but I prefer you call me Wendy.

I have sit down with my daughter in discuss.. I rather she be forward to me and I will go to her Dr. or make an appointment for her to see Dr. that's it

I will read the msn news later on.. as I m just quick checking in!

Wendy

I agree with you ladies too since it importants for parents to keep an open commuications with our children about sex and health issues without feelings embrasses to talk about it with the kids. Children should come to us to tell us and ask us any kind of questions they are curious to learn about and keeping the commuications open to each other.

I dont agree with this. The school should be only responsilbe for teaching children only.

yeah I agree the schools should be only teaching the kids about sex educations, not giving out birth controls or condoms without the parents permission. They should know better than to do something so stupid.

Just one more example of the government intruding into parental responsibility.:rl:

While I read whole of this thread, here's my new psot for this thread.

Birth Control is just stupid. Simple said because it destroy girl's ovaries which make the girl cannot become pregnanted if she want a child when she became adult, also there is varies of risks about taking the birth control. Condom have NO risk unless someone is doing with the condom improperly. So why not just pick the condom instead of those evil chemicals?

And what's more, we would never know if those kids want to have sex, we can't know everything whatever they do. The only way to keep kids safe from having the baby is to let them to have anything that protect from having the baby.

Speaking of birth control,, it don't really kill the girl's or woman's overies and still get pregnant. I was on BC for a while to help get rid of cysts and it clear it up and help control heavy period flow. But sadly I got pregnant anyway from being on birth control. Each birth control pills is different brands. But I hate birth control since it also cause lot of problems to gain extra weight too. But birth control does not protest a woman from STD, HIV and Aids and still be at risk. I would rather have a guy to wear condom is more effective. :)

Cyst? Wow, my anut experience that too. Agree with you all the way :) Haven't we heard of vagina condom? That would counts too if girls want to protect themselves.

Also other reason why I don't support birth control because we never really know if it is working or not because all we see is a girl put a small piece of pill in her mouth and shallow it, that's it. It's hard to tell if it is really working. I agree with you, birth control is not always effective.

yeah,, they created a new birth control patch and my gyno says it not always 100% effeitive. Lots of guys love to blame it on the woman getting pregnant when they knew they been warned the risk of birth control method and not take responbilites for their part in the pregnancy or std or aids when they tend to deny it. Some men are jerks out there.

Angel´s post

I totally agree on this... It´s parent´s responsiblity, not Government.
