Who has tried the Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Student 2011? Any issues? Is $129 a good price?

I've read mixed reviews.

I'm guessing that no one has tried this?

sorry nope but I have tried office in my mac a mini few years ago. IMO - it's very clumsy. Apple has its specific style and Microsoft has its own.

2 conflicting styles.... it's not gonna work. I would just get Apple's iWork even though I've never used it but it makes sense to use Apple product in Apple laptop... not Microsoft software. Apple's style is very intuitive and interactive. Microsoft is not. It's a dead-weight for Apple.

iWork is compatible with Microsoft file. There's a 30-days trial version so why don't you give it a shot?

Apple - iWork - Documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The Mac way.

I like Pages. It's cheaper too as well.

Jiro is right, Pages, Keynote and Numbers files are compatible with MS Office.

I have iWork '08 and '09 for my iMac. It's a good software. I often use my Numbers (spreadsheet) for my personal bills.

I used to have a Microsoft Word Processor for a long time about 10 years ago. I personally like my iWork better. I am sure that MWP has improved a lot over the years. I think I recalled on the news that MWP for Mac usually get infected from a virus once a while. I don't know how bad it was. But, the problem is that the news report could be wrong because Mac never get infected.

My hearing sister uses a Microsoft Office for Mac for her printing business. I don't know if she has ever use the iWork on her work.

The problem is, everything at the college specifically requires MS Office.

But I'll look into your recommendations.

Thanks, guys. :)

I knew you'd say something like that.

IMO - it's best to get an old version like 2008 or earlier for cheap. I think it's silly to spend that much on "latest" software that isn't very mac-friendly and it isn't a significant improvement from previous version. In fact - it's even more confusing!

I prefer 2003 version and I still use it. It's the only thing that makes sense and works exactly the way I want it.

I'm assuming that you need MS Office in order to read/write files for students. If that's the case, Apple software and open-source software (ie. OpenOffice) can read/write MS Office files and it can save the files in MS Office format too.

I'm going to ask the computer instructor about it tomorrow, if I get a chance. If she doesn't know, maybe she can check with the IT guy at the college.

Oh, I don't like the OpenOffice at all. Though, it was pretty good. I don't think that Reba would appreciate to use that one.

She could get a better discount to buy the MS or iWork at the community college. I think that she would like that.

me either. OpenOffice is terrible but hey..... if you're in a bind, whatca ya gonna do!?

I did not know MS Office has a compilable software for Mac.. hmm cool.

Since Reba needs MS required by her college then I would say go for it. Try to find a discount being a college student.

No idea about the iWork though. Good luck with your decision, Reba!

Reba, we have MS Office 2011 installed on several MACs, and I have some engineers saying that it's a great software, much improved over 2008 version. I heard that they really like it.

I buy all my software at student discount

My MSOffice 2007 Enterpise which include everything only cost me 59 dollar at student discount a couple of year ago when I brought it. It retails like 495 dollar or something around there

Windows 7 Pro only cost me 39 dollar or something when it was released.

Anytime you are a student and need to buy software, always check for student discounts online because it a huge savings.

Don't "loan" out your college email address to your family or friend so they can get it at a discount because you can only get one product per email address at discount. Example One MSOffice , One Windows 7 , One Dreamweaver, One Photoshop etc. You won't be able to buy same product again at discount.

the reason why you're able to get a free Windows is usually because of your computer fee that's part of your tuition. It's usually $200-300 per semester.

I'm going to check if the Exchange has iWorks.

I'm not a student but I interpret at the college. One of the instructors said I might be able to download some software as a staff member. I'm not really a staff member but a contract employee. I need to look into that.

I'm not a student but I work at a college. I don't have an email account because I'm an independent contractor.

The problem is, I don't have a student email account, and that's required for the discounts.
