At 6pm daily, the electronic gates to my community are locked...In order to enter after 6pm, you have to have your card to use at the gate (no guard)...if you don't live in the community, you have to push a button to speak with the operator and tell them the name of the person you are visiting and their #....the operator calls you and asks if you will accept this person before letting them enter...

Any suggestions here for me?....As the operator will not call the Relay...I explained that to them....but it seems I'm the only deafie living in this community...so they are not gonna make an exception for me. All I've been able to do is to let my friends know to come before 6pm or they cannot get in, and if they are deaf/Deaf...and can't speak....no way can they hear the operator at the gate asking them questions....

The ADA will address that...
they will need to install a video type intercom or station a full time guard...

I was going to suggest that too , I worked in a senior housing and there was a camera set up in the lobby and residents could see who was ringing their bell by watching their TV that was hooked up to the camera .
The TV had a special channel for the camera .

Do you have a cell phone that you can get simultaneous voice and data on? If so, get the CapTel app from Hamilton and give the gate attendant what Hamilton calls your "Call Me #'. You will get a captioned call without the calling party doing more than dialing your 10 digit "Call Me" number. Rather than go into more detail now here is Hamilton's web site.

And this part talks more about their "Call Me #"

I have no connection to Hamilton other than using their service. I do find it advisable to let people know you are using it because of the understandable delay while you are reading the captions which, of course, cannot be sent until the other party speaks and then you need time to read.

PS I forgot that their "Call Me #" can also be used in connection with your computer (PC or Mac) as I only use it with my cell phone.

Have them text you a few minutes before they get there and then meet them at the gate to let them in.

I can answer your question. I do live in an apartment in the gate community. I did ask apt manager to give me the special code number, so I can give it to a few specific people if they come to see me in the evening. I explained to apt manager that I can not hear the phone. I rely on VRS, so I don't see any point to it. They worked on it and finally gave me the gate code. It works with no problem.

Like the suggestion and I will try it!...Thanks

That's not true, criminals can jump over the gated communities so it don't make any difference.

True...even people riding with someone can break into other people's homes/apts. As for a guard at the gate...so many have been shot or beat up...Only thing anyone could do now after 6pm if they didn't have a card and the person they wanted to see/visit refused them....is to shoot up the speaker...or try to climb the gate and leave their car behind....and I'm sure that's been done before too...

And the "exit" gate...I've seen people coming thru after someone just leaves....they are driving the wrong way....Even someone who has a card to enter or who lives there, swipes their card to get in, and another car right behind them tail gates....2 cars enter at 1 time....The gates are electronic...

Even people disarm the gate...putting a board or something, a metal pipe to keep the gate from closing....

So does it really deter crime?....:hmm: Nah...it doesn't.

Well...I took Oddball's advise, which was good...and it worked!...Got 2 code numbers for the electronic gate...without any problem......Feel much better!..So thank you, Oddball...great advise.
