I usually say yes when someone ask me "can you read my lips?" because I noticed that when I say no, that someone loses interest in talking to me. I find it funny that sometimes when I don't understand them, they think it is their fault that I can't understand.

Do you guys feel the same way??

That's never really happened to me. They usually just use the pen-&-paper method. ;)

:) I am working alone deaf all hearing co workers at hotel I am serving them guests breakfast I have met alot ppl I try to undy them first I didnt but get used it ;) but they are impressed my job

EVERYONE ...and I mean EVERYONE is fascintated by the fact that I can read lips....my friends love playing the " What did I just mouth?" game with me...they are totally amazed...of course the last time I played it(almost a year ago....arughhhh!!!!!!!) , DANI got a word that I didn't get...hey I was tired and besides most hearies pick up speechreading from me like osmosis.

I think the next time someone asks if one of my Deaf friends can read lips, I am going to say "only if they have words on it"

same here.. they are like WOW.. and go gungho, blah blah.. i am like ok, WHATEVER.. lol..
then after i get to know them.. we have lipreading/guessing games to see if they can do it.. and i love WATCHING THEM GET SO FRUSTRATED!! it is so hilarious!! :D

I'm good lip reader but not 100%. I get them pen and paper if I dont understand them.

I can lipread little if person's lips are clearly that I can understand, sometimes with getures too, and if I don't undy, i either have paper and pen or Sidekick ready for chat.

When a person asked you the question "Can you read my lips" If I would understand when they asked me then I read their lips but if I do not understand, I would say "what?". It would gives them the idea.

lol that is good answer!

Couple of days ago, I had trouble understanding my college professor until he wrote a word (subject) on the board or use body language then I could catch more of what he was saying. I couldn't get an interpreter since Jan 24 until today.

I've always had told them I could read lips, but when they start talking, sometimes they don't move their lips too wide enough for me to read their lips....One time, I was sitting and waiting at the doctor's office, and this lady who came in and sat next to me while she also waited for the doctor, well she kept talking and talking, I couldn't tell her I was deaf because I was so shy so she kept on going and going, I just nodded and smiled, then she looked at me with a surprise look on her face and said " really ? " I was thinking :ugh: what the heck did she asked me? what did I agree on?.....

For now on, I always tell them I'm deaf up front in case I don't keep nodding on something that I have no clue what this person was talking about in the first place....sheeeesh!

I don't think i've had people lose interest in me.. But I've (like everyone else) had people get frustrated with me.

But sometimes I like to be funny when people ask me if I can lip read. They'll ask, and I'll say "there's no real way to answer that is there? If I say yes you'll assume I understand everything and if I say no, you'll think I'm joking."

Ok it's not really funny but it is true. :P
