Letter to PepsiCo from PFH

I'm glad to see many people writing letters. Good on you guys :)

Just wanted to make sure, this was snail mail, right? They hardly read electronic mail.

n this case, I was referring to people who have a lot of use of their hearing - whether they are culturally deaf or not...AGBAD has good techniques on how to use auditory training and to use phonics to teach reading. (I have to admit...it kills me to admit this. LOL) Seriously, it's good stuff. But for a person, especially a child, who is profoundly deaf, the results are not always positive. There are a few of us who were exceptions to that, but only a few. Some of the techniques were downright barbaric even. I shudder to even try to remember some of my experiences.
They may have good resources, but on the other hand, those resources could be incorparated under a culturally Deaf educational perspective....like "look this is a way to use your hearing and speech to interact with hearing people" And yes, I agree with you 100%.....granted they have moved on from tying kids hands together if they sign.....but an eternal speech therapy session is NOT GOOD!!!!

PFH, they begged me for months to do a speech on my experiences as an oral deaf child. I finally agreed to do it and at one of their conferences, I did just that.

Apparently telling the audience that"oral deaf education is a legal form of child abuse" wasn't in their agenda...oops.
:laugh2: That ROCKS!!!! You are my new hero! Maybe you helped some members in the audience think " maybe I should do a full toolbox approach!" I remember at the hoh conference I spoke at, there was a parent who was all "if any of you dhh adults live near here, please join us in activities. Our kids think that when they grow up they'll become hearing." Bear in mind this was Boston, land of a HUGE (and accepting) Deaf community....Swear to god I wanted to go over to the mom and say that the reason why most dhh as kids adults aren't invovled in AG Bell type organizations, is b/c many of them either found AG Bell/HLAA too boring,(I mean how many times can you talk about How the Ear Hears or the Latest HA/ALD before it gets dull as hell) or they gravitated to Deaf culture.

I remember that commercial.

I also remember when a bunch of deaf people thought it was funny, but when on person complained about it being offensive... those same other people started jumping in and complaining as well.

It's a JOKE! Can't anyone take a joke?

Hrmm, does it make me a bad person if AGBell gave me a chunk of $$$ for paying off nearly half of my freshman year?

Btw, I liked the commercial, but I get the question "Do you know ASL?" time to time from various people. "Just because I'm deaf doesn't mean I know ASL". So I do feel that AGBell's comment about deaf population being diverse is quite true as most of my deaf friends do not use ASL, but those who do use ASL is slowly growing. Perhaps Pepsi can do a commercial incorporating both kinds or create two or so different deaf commercials?

in exchange of what? propagating AGBell's agenda?
