GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. - County school officials are backing a principal's decision to bar a picture of a lesbian student dressed in a tuxedo from the high school yearbook.

Sam Ward, principal of Fleming Island High School, said he pulled the senior class picture because Kelli Davis was wearing boy's clothes. His decision was debated Thursday at a Clay County school board meeting that drew 200 people, but the board took no action, and Superintendent David Owens said the decision will stand.

Most of the 24 people who spoke at the meeting supported Kelli Davis.

"This is not to be treated as a gay rights issue," said her mother, Cindi Davis. "Rather it's a human rights issue."

Others applauded Ward's decision, including Karen Gordon, who said, "When uniformity is compromised, then authority no longer holds."

Officials at the northeastern Florida school have said the picture was pulled from the yearbook because Davis did not follow the rules on dress. School board attorney Bruce Bickner said there is no written dress code for senior pictures, but principals have the authority to set standards.

The student editor of the yearbook, Keri Sewell, was fired after refusing her adviser's order to take the picture out.

Your thoughts?

ohh dearie me, I think that was quite silly thing to do! That picture should be left in that yearbook and that student editor of the yearbook shouldn't be fired for refusing to take out the picture. Oh tsk tsk tsk

just for wearing a tuxedo?! How stupid, What would they rather to have a mini skirt or a tuxedo?

Just because she a woman and a lesbian, she wearing full clothes it shouldn't matter rather she a female or not. Sometimes schools are taking things too personal about what they wear as long its not something too sexy and showing their ass or boobs.

Tell me about it.....I mean Jesus Christ. I HATE dresses and girly girl stuff.I'd much rather wear a tux then a dress!

Maybe they didn't ban because she was in a tux but because she was a LESBIAN.

I wore pants to my prom-- I was the ONLY girl that wasn't in poofy prom dress. I think the classmates did ponder the question of "is Kirsi a lesbian"? since I did dance with my female friends...

My then-boyfriend refused to go to my prom so I ended up tagging along my friends and their dates to the senior prom.

There were no pictures of me in the yearbook from the prom although... [hmm!] This jsut show you how much the nation have their eyes covered up with wool with this "lesbian" issue, gay whatever... Cross-dresser or whatnot.

Will they throw a fit if a guy catwalks into the prom in a prom dress?

 It not like she was nude or anything...Good Lord!

They probably did this when they knew she was a lesbian. If it was just a woman who wasn't a lesbian or the word "lesbian" didn't come up, and she only liked wearing boys clothes... then they would probably have let her do that.

Thats messed up I have a friend who is a girl who whore a Tux in her Sr. Pic and no problems. She is not Lesbian. I think It was discrimination to take out the pic and fire that girl.

I guess the officials probably never heard of words such as metrosexual, crossdresser, or maybe transgendered. I think it's very stupid to do that to a student.

ahhhh my friend wore her TUX in senior picture and she is STRIGHT-A$$... had wonderful hubby and kids. There is nothing wrong against Lesbian or non-gay girl ?? Oh please! I would LOVE to wear tux NOT because I am gay.
