Lena's New Life

so is this test valid? It sounds like the majority of test I have used.

My school psychologist does not use this test. But she did say before gathering data she would give a nonverbal IQ test and achievment test for additional data. Use of just one test does not give all the valid data needed.

I would question the validity, depending upon what the purpose of giving the test is. I agree with the school psychologist. A battery of tests are needed in order to get a complete picture. The nonverbal IQ and the achievement tests are great places to start gathering information on individual students.

I think the testing purpose in this case was a bit biased. Using a test that has a lowered criteria will appear to show greater benefit, and thus garner support for CS based on manipulated results.

Unfortunately there is no way to directly contact Lenas' mother to ask for clarification.

Users of the system Cued Speech have no need to manipulate the results, their skills with language speak volumes.

thanks, I do agree that after reading the web site, Lena's mother is very knowledgeable with how she wants her to be educated. I was impressed with the way the mom has gone about picking the program and working with Lena.

The question came up with that this test has bias and lower standards. I wanted to see if that is true. I still have not find anyone who can say they know of anything like that. I am going to contact the Hearing Impaired teacher to see. If this test is valid, then I want to find out. If it is invalid then I also want to know. Either way it is a way to educate myself and no way a reflection on the progress of this child.

Then why exactly is it not used widely in deaf education? It has been around for over 40 years. If it were as successful in raising literacy rates and language skills of deaf children, why isn't it being utilized?

I don't think Lena's mother was resposnible for choosing the test administrated. Chances are, she knows nothing of the criteria, or what the modifications to any test might be. That would fall on the shoulders of those using the test to indicate inflated results. And the story itself states that the test uses lowered criteria for deaf/hoh children.
