Lawsuit says Purina dry food harmful to dogs

Gee, I don't know about cat food but I would not want to feed this to my cat . I would think the cat food is made in the same factory .

No kidding... I feed my cat Science Diet dry food, but she eats the friskies canned as well which is made by Purina. Makes me a bit nervous...

Science Diet is really crappy food , my dogs will not touch it ! It's over price junk .

Awww... well I guess if your dog won't touch it... lol probably for the better. My cat was eating the stuff when I first got her, and you know cats... when you change their food they pee on everything. Haha I'm not about to argue with a feline. She's healthy, that's all that matters to me. :)

<below rant>

Most commercial grocery store, "big box store", feedlot store and prescription brands are full of crap, regardless if it says anything about "science", or "vet-prescribed" or "wholesome" or "healthy" etc...the pictures you see on the bags of food are NOT really what ends up getting IN the "food".
Any pretty colors are the vast majority of the time, FAKE and likely or potentially cancer-causing in the long term. Dogs and cats don't care about pretty colors or different shapes, nor do they care about the "4 food groups" or about "healthy vegetables". Given the option, wild or feral cats and dogs will go for meat-based and real, fresh food, not heavily processed stuff. Cats and dogs are biologically and digestively - particularly cats - similar/same as wolf and lion, which are carnivores.

I strongly advise folks to try and avoid anything made by Purina. The problems coming to light in the news aren't new - but they are more and more being made public by people who are tired of seeing their pets die from things like cancer, kidney and liver failure and having other quality of life issues, that while not necessarily immediately life threatening - DO lessen overall life quality and make the animal more susceptible to advanced problems. Ear, eye infections, smelly coat and breath, allergies, hip/joint, urinary problems - are not a "natural" part of having a dog or cat, but people
have come to assume so. These are issues caused by an imbalanced and weakened or ill immune system that may be able to hold itself together while the animal is young <or by virtue of luck of genetics> but as these things go on, the body has less and less ability to tolerate the problems.

Thanks for that, Dogmom....so what alternative would you suggest?

I feed my dog with Fromm - http://frommfamily.com/

high-quality food. not cheap but my dog's health is superb and extremely healthy for his age. he's about 11 years old now and he's acting like 5 years old. imagine the money I've saved from vet bills

Thanks. i ll look into it if i have a dog.

my oldest kitty is almost 15 years old. He does eat junk like fancy feast. eh.. I still feed him plain chicken, mixed little vegs, shrimps. I know shrimps are not good for cats but once in a while is OK. I know. He wont eat plain white rice. eh..

Once my kids are all grown up, then i ll buy more real food like mine and cook separate.. BUT i know myself that i have four cats. I still am interested in adopting a medium or tiny doggie when my job changes and be home more often. I really want to feed dogs good.

I don't feed my cat any human food... but she still tries. She even went as far as pulling the rubber guard out of the garbage disposal to steal some steak fat that my boyfriend failed to run down the drain. I found the chewed up piece of fat and the rubber guard lying on the floor the next morning, and gave my man a fifteen minute lecture on the fact that we used garlic on that meat.

I know, I'm brutal.

My daughter MIL has a dog and the dog get dried Blue Buffalo Dog Food . Some of the kibbles are 'blue' and the dog refuse to eat them ! I don't buy my dog any food that has added color to it. Like you said dogs could careless what color or shape their food is. We could feed our dog cookies shaped like poop and they would not care.

So does Fromm ship your dog food to you? Like a monthly subscription or something similar?

I buy it from my local pet store... same place where I got my dog from. I wish I bought a lot more when there was new year sales - buy 1 get 1 free :(

I got 4.

that's why I don't buy any brands from Petco or similar. Purina? LOL it's a poison. I knew this long time ago.

the smell of dog's poop is an indication of food quality. stinky poo = stinky food

My dog has nice healthy looking poops and not stinky . I buy this dog food from a natural dog store , the owners only has two stores . They don't sell any store brand dog food . If you watch a TV commercial for dog food you see the dog running to the bowl of Purina dog food , the poor dog has not been feed for while and that why it wolfing down the crap. None of my dogs eat their food that way b/c they get fed 3 small meals day . My dog leave food in their bowl b/c they know I will give more later. The poor dog on TV is eating like that it's last meal. :( I hate commercial for dog food .
