JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Seven hearing-impaired emergency room patients are suing Baptist Health Systems for allegedly failing to provide qualified sign language interpreters.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Jacksonville, claims the health care provider violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.

One patient said she was given a stuffed monkey instead of a sign language interpreter. Another couldn't hear when her name was called by emergency workers.

A Baptist spokeswoman told The Florida Times Union the hospital couldn't comment on the lawsuit because it had not been served a copy. She added that they are committed to effective patient communication.

An attorney with Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, which filed the suit, said deaf patients were denied full access to care.

Stuffed monkey? This is really an insult to injury.. It is like hey kid, here is the stuffed monkey and shoveled as if nothing happens. A completely neglicted by the hospital!

I really dunno what's going on here in Jax....but I've had the same problems over and over....but never a "stuffed monkey"....if they gave me one, I would have stuck it up their asses!...

Even went to court last week, and called 12 days ahead of time for an intrepretor and none showed up....I told the clerk's assistant that I was not doing anything until the intrepretor showed up...so they postponed it.....

And at Baptist Hospital, where my ENT has his office, time and time again, I ask if my intrepretor is here....the office clerk does a "little smirk"....turns around and ask another lady about it....and nothing gets done!...

Even my doctor's office....I ask for a female intrepretor because at times I do have to half-undress....and every time there is a man!...I told him he might as well LEAVE!....Yeah. I was very angry....

I could rant on and on about it all....

Maybe the stuffed monkey was given to a child. Still and all, this is pathetic; I guess the hospital needs educating. Wait, Baptist? Hmmmm, a private entity that gets no federal dollars? Would that make a difference?

Maybe some hospitals don't see much of a difference between a stuffed money and a terp. :dunno:

I don't know. I mean, many people give a "Get well" stuff bear and such.

But it doesn't sound too good if they were refused from an interpreter, and was giving a stuff monkey instead to shut them up.
