Deanne was "discovered" performing as a young adult in a dance group for people who are deaf. Deanne was born with a severe hearing loss that might have been caused by German measles. She is deaf in her right ear, and uses a hearing aid in her left ear, which has some hearing. That, plus reading lips, helps her communicate. She also uses American Sign Language. As she was growing up, she credits her mother with helping her with academics, and her father for showing her different cultures, and how to be open to all kinds of people.

Besides her work in the new PAX series, she teaches deaf and hard of hearing children.

(DEANNE BRAY is the star of "Sue Thomas: F.B.EYE," and portrays an earnest, young deaf woman who falls into an exciting career as an undercover surveillant for the FBI. Bray herself is severely deaf and has been acting for more than 10 years, appearing in theatrical productions, film and guest-star roles on numerous television series. Contrary to the advice of some professionals, Bray's parents made certain their daughter was instructed from an early age onward to speak and write English and learn American Sign Language as well, sending her through a variety of learning programs and centers to strengthen her language skills. A California native, Bray broke into the entertainment industry after she was discovered performing with a deaf dancing group called "Prism West" at a deaf festival at California State University, Northridge, where she earned a B.A. degree in Biology.

Bray has appeared in the NBC Movie-of-the-Week "Ed McBain's 87th Precinct: Lightning" directed by Bruce Paltrow and co-starring Randy Quaid, Independent films "What Do The Women Want?" directed by Guy Shalem, "Last Mountain" with Soon-Tek Oh and "L.A. Sheriff Homicide" for CBS. Her numerous television credits include guest starring roles on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "Ellen," "Diagnosis Murder," "The Pretender" and "Strong Medicine." Additionally, Bray was a host on a nationally syndicated show for the deaf community, "Caption This."

Bray holds an extensive list of stage credits from the acclaimed Deaf West Theatre in California including "Road To The Revolution," for which she garnered a Best Supporting Actress Award for the 2001 A.D.A. Awards; "Oliver" which earned her a Best Translation nomination at the 2000 Los Angeles Ovation Awards; and "The House of Bernarda Alba" which won Best Ensemble at the 1999 LA Weekly Awards. She also has appeared in Deaf West's "Alice in Wonderland," "A Christmas Carol" and "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest." At the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, she played Helen Keller in "Helen & Frida" and appeared in the Vincent Paderson production, "Kazoo."

For the past three years, Bray has taught science and math to deaf and hard of hearing students in East Los Angeles, established a literacy program -- "The Little Bookworm Club"-- for deaf and hard of hearing children and is about to complete her Masters in Education. She is involved in numerous organizations and serves as Second Vice Chairperson on the council board of the Greater Los Angeles Council on Deafness (GLAD) and the Non-Traditional Casting Project.

Bray lives in North Hollywood, California with her husband Troy Kotsur, a deaf actor who recently appeared in the acclaimed Deaf West Theatre production of "True West." They have both been cast in Deaf West's exciting journey to the Mark Taper Forum for their next musical production, "Big River" (November-December 2002), a role Bray will have to forgo for her work on "Sue Thomas: F.B.EYE."

ESTEEMED EAR SURGEON KILLED AFTER TESTIFYING AGAINST COLLEAGUE

When esteemed ear surgeon, Dr. Jack Mallory (guest star Jack MacGruder) is found murdered in his office, Detectives Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) suspect a prescription pusher. After further investigation, the detectives learn the doctor had testified in a controversial case involving another doctor -- Dr. Strauss (guest star Timothy Carhart) -- who had performed a cochlear implant on a baby. The baby got an infection and died as a result of the surgery, leaving the deaf community with strong opinions about the procedure. Detectives Goren and Eames race to uncover a tangled web of beliefs in a community they're not members of. Alexandria Wailes, Deanne Bray, Garrett Zuercher, Darren Frazier and Eric Bogosian also star.

It is really sad because many Parents were not very careful to do rearch before they make decision for their Deaf children. Many doctors were not telling them the truth.

Law Order on T.V. show, it talked about the Death infant surgery cochlear implant. Doctor did not give out much information to the parents. Risks from the Surgical Implant Procedure

Injury to the facial nerve --this nerve goes through the middle ear to give movement to the muscles of the face. It lies close to where the surgeon needs to place the implant, and thus it can be injured during the surgery. An injury can cause a temporary or permanent weakening or full paralysis on the same side of the face as the implant.

Meningitis --this is an infection of the lining of the surface of the brain. People who have abnormally formed inner ear structures appear to be at greater risk of this rare, but serious complication. For more information on the risk of meningitis in cochlear recipients, please refer to FDA's Public Health

Notification: FDA Public Health Notification: Continued Risk of Bacterial Meningitis in Children with Cochlear Implants with a Positioner Beyond Twenty-Four Months Post-Implantation

and its Advice to Patients: Advice for Patients with Cochlear Implants: New Information on Meningitis Risk

Cerebrospinal fluid leakage --the brain is surrounded by fluid that may leak from a hole created in the inner ear or elsewhere from a hole in the covering of the brain as a result of the surgical procedure.

Perilymph fluid leak --the inner ear or cochlea contains fluid. This fluid can leak through the hole that was created to place the implant.

Infection of the skin wound.

Blood or fluid collection at the site of surgery.

Attacks of dizziness or vertigo.

Tinnitus, which is a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear.

Taste disturbances --the nerve that gives taste sensation to the tongue also goes through the middle ear and might be injured during the surgery.

Numbness around the ear.

Reparative granuloma --this is the result of localized inflammation that can occur if the body rejects the implant.

There may be other unforeseen complications that could occur with long term implantation that we cannot now predict.

Kalista, you really have to bring up the subject of CI negative things such as side effect in this thread that is only about the show that will star Deanne Bray and others? It is not about CI, it is about a doctor being killed after the deaf baby died of some infection related to CI. It just a TV show!! Yes, the show does not give full information that you have about CI. I respect people with CIs as the same as any Deaf, HOH, and Hearing. No differences of level or respect. While we understand the situations may face upon after surgery, there always be risks of factors for anybody.

You know what? I am qualifed for CI but I decided against it because I know what best for me and I did my homework. Parents and patients should always have homework researching ANY medical changes such as surgery for anything such as knee replacement, eye replacement, eye correction surgery, CI, you name it. Nowdays they DO have informative seminars for all prospect patients.

My mom had her knee replaced on both knees within six months. She learned alot about it during her seminar at the hospital with other knee replacement patients who were going to get their knees done under the knife. They DO tell everyone the downside of it. In this case, knee replacement is good for 15 years. Thanks to that, I realized one thing that CI information YOU provided didnt match. There was a company had a recall on CI the same year I was thinking and praying about. I saw that news about recall and I said ah, there is my answer that I was waiting for. I decided against surgery. Besides that there are other factors I KNOW myself compared to both sides--the good side and the bad side.

I lost my hearing August 2004 to tinnitus and menigre's and that means ringings and noises in my ears plus the bad balance I have. I still can hear in the shower with water running and I said if I had surgery, then I lose MORE hearing because of their opening up my inner ear. I know the FIVE percent of all surgery caused nerve damages. I already have hearing loss and that is one too many!!!

The REAL reason I decided against it is my faith and I asked God to show me in bible why I should not do that and its in Old Testment saying do not put any objects in your body. You see, God created us and made us this way for a reason and we are not always to correct them with objects not belonging to our bodies.

Sure, I miss my hearing but its for the better!

I have a few friends who will be on the show.

It's gonna be interesting to see my friends on televison. :)

:bump:

REMINDER:

The program is on TONIGHT!

I just watched it, It was very good, in fact I can understand how Tommy felt, because his hearing sister walked out of his life, and never came back so he thinks all hearing people walk out on deaf people, and when his girlfriend had a cochlear implant he killed her surgeon. He did it for her, and for the deaf community. :(

Since I'm an interpreter, I naturally gravitated toward that aspect of the show. They completely screwed it up. Interpreters in a criminal investigation should be a neutral and impartial certified professional. The cop who was interpreting should not have been interpreting. As a cop, he's not neutral or impartial. Any evidence offered from the interpretation could be challenged by the defense attorney.

TV always gets interpreting wrong.

I understand your point, but I don't see a problem with a cop interpreting, he did pretty well. It never really bothers me who interpreters for me as long a person can sign, I'm okay with it. ;)

It was alright!! I thought they would do it better but no.. Only show Deanne Bray short!! It isnt enuff. I was told that two of my friends were in the show but I don't see them. They edited it out! RME

I was expecting 3 of my friends on the show, but I didn't see them. I probably overlooked them or something... :dunno:

I completely agree with you on that.. That was my first thought when I saw the interpreter stepped out of his "interpreter" role and act as "cop" when the detective ask him to interpret what these 2 people's private conversation, even in public place (but thats is subjected to debate). I think his ethics is "questionable" in my opinion.

But the show overall was pretty good for "TV"..
