Lactose Intolerance or IBS?

Hi. I have GERD and am Lactose intolerant. I post because I don't want anyone reading this thread to think they have to go to a health food store if they are lactose intolerant. Solution is simple, stay away from lactose. Skim milk, cheese made from skim milk (moserrela sp), pasta whole grain. whole grain bread. fruit veggie. Any red meat.

To figure out your dieting needs, do a search internet, you will find something.

That's good advice. Unfortunately with IBS, it can involve trial and error to figure out what bothers the person.

But, still good advice. If the problem is just lactose intolerance, you're right. If the person limits or eliminates foods containing lactose, they're problem free!

I used to think I had IBS but I figured it out! IBS is a pain. I feel for all who have it!

I have lactose intolerant since 1997 after major sick from viruses in stomach, after that, lactose intolerant in during my childhood is severe, I can't consume alot of milk, cheese, ice cream or any contain milk with lactose at this time, unless if took Lactaid pills and my stomach got more worse then went visit clinic at hospital then had operate for upper endoscopy in 1998 and prescribed an medicine, it was called Prilosec (not OTC version, there's no OTC at this time) and few others, I started feel alot better and severe of lactose intolerant has been decline, as I just got used with lactose intolerant, after that, I got some heartburn issue.

I still have lactose intolerant but mildly, I only got diarrhea and rarely to get upset or cramp stomach, I can consume of milk, cheese, ice cream or any contain lactose but only cause diarrhea, it's not very big deal since I got used of it. I'm currently have problem with heartburn, I usually take generic version of Protonix, it work so decent, also I want take Nexium, that's more stronger than Protonix but only problem, my medicaid won't cover on Nexium since there's no generic version for Nexium, the pharmacist told me it's cost $150 for 30 pills at Target, I was like rip off and went picked Protonix instead.

I stopped Prilosec in last 7 years ago and went switched to Rolaids, just in case for upset/cramp stomach and severe heartburn.

I had tried soy milk before and hate it, I rather to drink regular 2% milk or whole milk, there's Lactaid milk that contain cow's milk with lactose free.

Thank you for post about yourself. :) I used to take a prilosec and prepcaid. It's not help me enough. Tums is work for me. I haven't take a heartburn for long times. I used like drink 2% milk before. Now I don't drink that much. My husband can't drink 2% because he has a sinus infection.

Do you eat any dairy product so lately?

Yup on most of days, I need consume of dairy to get more calcium as 100% on daily value, I don't take any calcium pills because they aren't natural as milk, ice cream or cheese.

I'm lactose intolerant... still a bit new to all this stuff, as I got diagnosed in May.

I've had to change my diet and put in a lot of alternatives.

Plain milk replaced with lactose-free milk, soy milk and rice milk. I've got to try goats milk.
Plain cheese replaced with goats cheese.

I never try to taste rice and goat milk before. Is that taste good? Does it taste different from plain milk? I tried to eat a goat cheese. It's not bad.

I can't take OJ with my medicine due it could decline of medicine to being effective.

You guys can try Almond milk? The brand is called Almond Breeze. It contains lactose & casein free, cholesterol & gluten free, and a good source of calcium, Vitamins A, D & E.
I personally prefer Almond milk and Rice milk over Soy milk.

While living in Mexico, we usually drink Horchata (cinnnamon/sugar/almond rice milk). Be careful, it contains sugar.
